24pn to 60i offline/online question

I've been hired to offline a documentary project:

Offline and online in FCP 5.1.2.

Source: Studio interviews shot on HDCAM 1080/60i converted to DVCAM 4:3 letterbox for offline. B roll and field interviews were recorded to DVCProHD 720/24pn onto P2 cards (with HVX200).

Online will be for broadcast: mastered to HDCAM 1080/60i.

Question is how do I safely integrate the P2 24pn footage into this 29.97 offline/online scenario.

Thanks much, James

why don't people talk to each other???

Your best bet is to use cinema tools to introduce 3.2 cadence to the 24 material.

Output the the HVX 200 material to a DVCPro HD tape (DP 121 or DP 1001). With the AJ-HD1200A, or the newer fancier deck, and a component in video card, you can bring in the footage at 29.97. Might be a bit too expensive or out of your abilities to do, but it will give you the proper offline/online workflow ability. And you won't lose quality going out to the HD stock, you'll simply not get the native 24 that the original HVX gave you.

cheers.

Apparently the PBS affiliate would be willing to do the conversion (they are also underwriting the online). So we could go to DVCProHD 720/30p (60p?) on tape. Or even I've been told to HDCAM 1080/60i to match the studio interview footage. I imagine it would be worth it to them to have things go more smooth in the transition to online.

What I don't understand is how such a basic mismatch could have arisen in the first place. The Director who is not very technically savvy said the camera folks went back and forth out in the field on whether to shoot 24pn or 24p. Seems like a quick call to the studio folks would have nipped that one in the bud.

Well I think its a constant problem that will never go away. Production never thinks to call post until its too late. They just leave it up to post to save their a$$ when they could have just had a 10 minute meeting and saved a mirad of headaches. While I try to get people to smarten up regarding that, it just seems it never happens that way. Anyway....

I'm not sure about taking DVCPro HD from the HVX 200 to the HD Cam tapes. Haven't used the HD Cam stuff myself, so definitely don't know about taking one to the other. Personally though, if you can have access to the necessary decks and gear, I'd stick to using the AJ-HD1200A and outputing to DVCPro HD tapes. Simply because its just like taking it to the bigger brother of the HVX anyway. Also, if they have somehow decided to shoot a mix of 24p and 24pN then going out to the DVCPro HD tapes will normalize all of that basically. And you would be recording to 720p60 when you do that (whether through FCP or if you can get the footage onto P2 cards and firewire straight from camera to deck, which is what I do with our stuff). Then log and capture with that to an offline resolution (we use the SD out from the AJ-1200 to our Black Magic and works like a charm).

cheers.
