Hello, i just recently was givin the opourtunity to capture some material shot on my DVX at 24p (advanced) in a discreet 6 edit suit with digisuite capture cards. Im trying to capture thru a sony DSR-45 deck (using componant out) to the digisuite card. I am capturing the clips via uncompressed 8bit using the motion jpeg codec. However, when i bring the .AVI files back to FCPHD i cannot remove the pulldown (wont recongnize it). The video also seems to have a strange field displacement (vertical lines)..... i was wondering if anyone might have expirience capturing from the AG-DVX to uncompressed and could throw me some pointers.

Thanks-

Rhydon -- Check the apple site... but my answer there was you shouldn't be capturing in uncompressed. You won't get any better than just capturing via firewire. DV25 is DV25. You can't make it any better by capturing it uncompressed. It is what it is.

Captain, haha, its good to see you in 2 places. But i challange you to do the following. Capture a greenscreen shot from the S-video out of your camera into an uncompressed stream (and dont upconvert in post, dosent get same result) then capture the same greenscreen shot from Firewire (to DV), key it out and let me know your results. I guarantee you, your first attempt will yeild you unbelievable results- ive tried it. Now if i could only get it to work with the advanced pull down.... Also please captain, there is a methode behind my maddness, please do not post telling what i cannot acheive, like i said i have done it before- as well as a couple others on this site. So anyone, if you have knowlage about capturing a 24PA stream into uncompressed please reply!!!

Hi Rhydon,

I agree with Captain Mench, DV is not compressed further from when it goes from tape to drive. It's codec is changed, to whichever codec you have setup on FCP, Avid or any NLE, but the main compression comes from internally, in the camera once the data is layed down to tape. DV25 on tape, DV25 on your drive and thus DV25 in your NLE.
However, you can edit in a different codec, say Animation or even DV50 if you wanted. Sometimes the results can work better with respect to color smoothing. Which keying effects rely on, greatly. Avid & FCP codecs both handle color smoothing differently.

But a few questions I have is why try to capture 24p(A) through component? As I understand it, the DVX works the same way that the Varicam works, in the way the data is layed down. Certain frames are duplicated and flagged. Those flagged frames are removed digitally through the pulldown removal. If one were to capture or transfer through component or through any analog connection, that would void the flag frames. I could be wrong, but that's how I understood how 24p works, in the first place.

Also, since when do AVI's work in FCP?
