24PA Remove Advanced Pulldown after SDI capture

Hi, I was wondering if anyone would have a solution for this. I just captured a bunch of 525i 24PA footage that was shot on an SDX900 camera, upconverting to 1080i 29.97 DVCProHD using the KONA 3 card, SDI signal.

I tried to do remove the advanced pulldown frames after I'm done capturing the clips but I got an error msg from FCP. It shows that there was no advance pulldown frames encoded in the video. I'm very certain that it was shot 24PA since I tried to do the advanced pulldown removal on the same clip, except it was captured via firewire and it worked.

Thanks.

If you capture via SDI, you cannot remove the pulldown, for the flagging in the footage isn't there. The flags are only present if you capture via firewire.

AFAIK.

There's zero to be gained by capturing DV or DVCPRO50 via Firewire. And actually something to be lost as you've learned with the flags disappearing. Capture again with Firewire and you'll be ok. Once you have it DVCPRO50 as 24p you can then do an upconvert with Compressor or FCP or the Kona and quality will be identical to what you had with the SDI chain. You cannot add in more information than is present on the Firewire signal- it's a 1:1 digital clone of your camera tapes.

thanks for the replies. i found out that there is no way to remove advance pulldown after the clips are captured via SDI. the only way to do it with the up-conversion as well is to rent a panasonic 1200 or 1400 deck to upconvert the 525 footage to 1080. set the system freq to 23/24. Take in the SDI signal via the KONA card as 1080psf 23.98.

Upconversion doesn't need to happen during ingest. You can do it at any point, in fact it's often best to do it just before color correction after the edit is complete.
