24pa problem in Premiere Pro 2.0

i feel like this is an overly discussed issue, but i've done a lot of searches on the forum, and have no final answers. basically, here's my problem...

i have a bunch of 24pa clips that i captured into premiere and they appear as 29.97fps in my bin. this makes it so i have to render every time i move a clip onto my 23.98 timeline. it seems that premiere pro 2.0 does not have a pulldown removal on capture function.

two things-
i am positive that i shot in 24pa
i am using a 24p timeline.

how can i remove the 2332 crap that comes wired into 24pa, because it sure isnt happening when i capture.

The clips in my bin show up as 23.976 and work great on my timeline which shows a timebase of 23.976 and my display mode is 24fps timecode.

I would suspect your bin clips might be the problem.

do you do anything special when you capture?

i thought premiere captured only at 29.97 and the pulldown removal was in the timeline. if this is the case, how can i make sure premiere knows that i'm using 24pa clips.

You're right, Premiere does capture at 29.97 then removes the pulldown (ignores fields/frames) once in the timeline. Then, to display on an external device, it adds a pull-up. Did you capture within a 24p project (preset)? For some reason Premiere isn't recognizing them as 24p or 24pa clips. You could try going to File > Interpret Footage and check the "Remove 24p DV pulldown" box (version 2.0) to see what happens.

i did capture within the DV-24p setting. When I go to interpret footage, I see the place to click "remove 24p DV pulldown" but I can't click it. It is greyed out.

THis is frustrating, because I feel like i'm doing everything right. Its just that all my clips say they are 29.97, even when shot in 24pa, captured in a 24p setting, and placed in a 24p timeline.

okay, making progress...

the fact that the remove dv pulldown option was greyed out got me thinking. premiere thinks this is regular 60i footage.

i have been capturing with a cheapo camera to preserve the heads on my dvx - i heard this was perfectly acceptable. but then i imported a clip into my timeline that I captured using the dvx. wouldn't you know, this clip is recognized as 23.98 fps and imports into my timeline render-free.

so, its the camera i use to capture!!? I thought any camera would do! Once the video is recorded to tape, isnt it the same no matter what plays it?

weird...

The camera (or deck) that you use to capture DV from shouldn't have any effect. You can easily prove this by capturing the same tape from the "cheapo camera" and your DVX, the clips should behave the same in Premiere.

Just to confirm. You shot 24PA not 24PN and you are using one of Premiere's DV - 24P presets?

well, i captured a clip with the cheapo and with the dvx...turns out it did have an effect. using the cheapo the clip registered at 29.97 and with the dvx it registered at 23.98. problem solved...sort of.

i understand that the camera used for capture should not have any effect - however, i think it matters in my case. my cheapo camera registers timecode with 6 digits (minute, second, frame). it is such a consumer camera that it doesn't have an hour measure. when i recorded my footage, it was on hour 1. this meant that when i was capturing with the cheapo, it said my footage was on minute 70, 80, etc. i can only imagine that this inconsistency with the timecodes was the cause of my problem.

crazy. anyway, do eveyone else's cheapo cameras measure timecode by the hour? if thats the case, then i need to get a camera like that...

what cameras is everyone else using for capture?

I am using a first generation zr-100 (the cheapest camera i could find) and have no problem with 24p. If its transfwerring through firewire on a camera then its a dv stream (meaning it has to be 29.97, .9PAR etc.) The footage should be flagged that it is 24pa and premiere then romoves the pulldown. Perhaps you were attempting to capture 24pa footage but you captured it not using scene detect and the first section of what you captured (even if this means just one frame from something you shot on the tape beforehand) was 29.97. Then premiere would think the whole clip is 29.97 and not remove the pull down. You can go into interpret footage in this senario and tell it that it is 23.976 and to remove the pulldown.

im just comfused because 24p capture is supposed to work with any camera and i captured the same clip with both my cheap camera and my dvx - only the dvx capture registered the clips as 24p.

also, everything on the tape is 24pa.

weird, huh. for now my only guess is the 6 digit timecode instead of 8 on the cheap camera.

No.

I just make sure I start in a 24p project that creates 24p timelines. I don't capture from a camera but an "el cheapo" deck which is under control of premiere. All the clips shot in 24pa capture directly as 23.976 no problem.

Wait a second, now you guys got me thinking.... When I click right side of the mouse ---> properties (on a piece of 24PA footage in my timeline) it says that the frame rate is 29.97 (24p). Shouldn't it be saying that it is 23.976 instead????

Shouldn't matter how you capture. I can capture 24pa in a 29.97 project, it will be 29.97. I open that same clip using the 24p preset...the clip is 23.976.

The clip properties will read 29.97...that's how the clip is recorded. But in the project window it should say 23.976.

Alright, thanks for the clarification.
