I have just recently bought the 100A and captured some test footage. The problem is, when there is fast motion going across the screen it looks the fields seperate horizontally. I found that the sutter speed was at 60 so I set it 24 and the problem subsided was still present. When I scrub through the footage frame by frame, I see no sign of the fields seperating, I have set everything I could think of to 23.98, pulldown and all, please let me know if the wierd field seperation is normal playback experience or if I am capturing wrong or something thank you. I am starting production with this camera in the next few weeks so any insight would be very helpful.

Re: 24pa playback problems

hm... I don't have the correct answers but to start it off, I believe that's just the footage interlacing- usually happens because of the process of the 24p. I think that's what you're seeing. 24p or 24pA
more than one horizontal lines from top to bottom?
it's interlacing artifact maybe.
it's supposed to be normal on fast images... but im not sure at all... that is if you say you don't see it while scrubbing then it shouldn't be anything you should be alarmed about.

Re: 24pa playback problems

If you playback images in realtime on a computer screen you're likely to see 'tearing'. This is when one image is being dispalyed and the next image has started to re-write it on screen when you see it. 2 images are then split horizontally. If this is only on the computer (not on true video output) and doesn't show up stepping through frame by frame then it's tearing. Common for fast action, very dependent on machine and display size.

Re: 24pa playback problems

I shoot a lot of stuff in 24PA and use Final Cut Pro HD, what I would suggest is in conjunction with what Scott was explaining. When I edit, I always watch my external video display(monitor) not the monitors within FCP. Since I keep those monitors set at the lowest quality, I use them for reference and use my external monitor for seeing how the final product will look. So, log and capture the video, bring in to FCP, run your external monitor off your camera or deck and play it back and see if you still see it. I can't say I have ever experienced that problem personally. I do know I don't normally trust the LCD display on the camera, because I have found it often will show odd shutters, etc. on movement that are not really there.

Hope that helps.

Re: 24pa playback problems

If you are still having problems with interlacing then try to put a de-flicker or de-interlace filter on your footage with the problems. In final cut the filters are under filters - video - de-interlace.
