I am editing a documentary shot in 24P Advanced mode (F6) on my Powerbook with a Lacie external hard drive. Because of the enormous amount of footage I have, I am digitizing everything using the Offline RT mode. My problem is that I haven’t found an Offline RT coupled with Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown option.
When I digitized full quality DV before, I simply chose Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown under the Capture Presets tab. This allowed me to very simply digitize my 24PA footage, and edit it at a 24FPS rate. But since this project requires me to capture in Offline RT, under the “Capture presets” tab I chose “DV to Offline RT NTSC (Photo Jpeg)” instead. I have already digitized about 20 tapes using this setting, and just realized that all the footage is 29.97 frames, which is not what I originally planned for. Because I originally shot in 24P Advanced, I wanted to keep 24fps rate in editing also.
Question #1: Is it possible to do Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown when capturing with Offline RT? Note: When I tried modifying the “DV to Offline RT NTSC (Photo Jpeg)” options, I realized that “Remove Advanced Pulldown (2:3:3:2) from DV-25 and DV-50 sources” is grey and cannot be selected. Should I modify the “DV NTSC 48khz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown” settings instead to capture Offline RT? I could change the compressor to “photo jpeg”, quality to “35%”, and FPS to “23.98”, would it then have Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown and Offline RT quality?
Question #2: Is it possible to convert already digitized 29.97 fps footage to 24fps within Final Cut without redigitizing? Then I could import it into a new project with 24fps set from the beginning to lessen future problems.
Question #3: Should I just continue digitizing in “DV to Offline RT NTSC (Photo Jpeg)”29.97fps mode? I think it’s not a good idea to mix 24fps with 29.97 material. Most of this footage is being digitized for a very general rough cut, but on the other hand, I want to start off on the right foot so I don’t run into problems later on.
Below are the settings I have used for the past 20 tapes:
Under “Audio/Video Settings”
“Summary tab”
-Sequence preset- Offline RT NTSC (23.98)
-Capture preset- DV to Offline RT NTSC (Photo Jpeg)
“Sequence presets” tab
-Offline RT NTSC (Photo Jpeg)- 23.98
“Capture presets” tab
- DV to Offline RT NTSC (Photo Jpeg)
Thank you for your advice,
Alex
