I shot 24pa footage in SQUEEZE mode on my dvx-100b. captured into FCP with easy set up:

Format:NTSC
FPS:29.97
Use: Custom Setup

Audio/Video Settings:

Summary:
Sequence preset: DV NTSC 48kHz - 23.98

Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal

Device control Preset: Firewire NTSC Basic

Video Playback: Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480)

When i choose "edit" on The Capture Preset (DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal) it shows the following:
Quicktime Video Settings:

Digitizer: DV Video Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Input: AG-DVX100B Quality: Best
FPS:29.97

Ok, heres my issue. From my knowledge i am doing everything correctly. I shot 24pa, and i am capturing it in 29.97fps using the advanced pulldown preset. After capturing my footage, the clip in the Browser shows that it is 29.97, which i think is correct. then i want to go to Tools>Remove Advanced Pulldown, to change the 29.97 into 23.98 so i can edit on my 23.98 timebase sequence. but when i go to Tools>Remove Advanced Pulldown, i get this error message: "File does not contain frames encoded using Advanced Pulldown". I need help. I am confused, i have been reading and testing and i have captured the footage so many times my head hurts using different settings and i can't figure it out. What am i not understanding? What am i doing wrong?

Thank you for your help in advance!!!!!!

Drop a few seconds of the clip in a 29.97 sequence.

Make sure the canvas is set to 100%.

1) do you see any render lines above the clip?
2) Arrow thru the video... do you see any INTERLACED frames? How many per each 5 frames?

Let's start there.

Wait -- under WHAT column do you see it showing 29.97 in the browser? Are you sure it doesn't say 30?

OK, so i dropped the clip into my 23.98fps timeline, FCP asked if i wanted to conform my sequence to match my clip settings and i said YES and the sequence changed from 23.98 to 29.97fps (i watched it change) and i made sure the canvas was 100%.

1) There were no render lines above the clip
2) Yes i do see interlaced frames, 1 interlaced frame per 5, so 4 progressive and 1 interlaced

The column that i am looking at is the "vid rate" in the Browser.

CaptM- I have to go run some errands, thank you for your help, i will look forward to reading your reply later this afternoon. Again, thank you for your much needed help!

Ok... so yes... with one interlaced frame it SHOULD indeed be 24pA. That's what I was really wondering.

Ok...

So, something failed on capture and it resorted to just ignoring the cadence. Maybe you had it set to ignore all warnings or some such.

A few things might be of issue now.

You might have some timecode breaks. Here's what I suggest trying now:

Drop the entire capture into a 29.97 sequence.

Set an IN/OUT on a clip that you didn't turn the camera off on.

FILE - EXPORT - CURRENT SETTINGS - SELF CONTAINED name it something and save in your scratch folder.

Drag that back into FCP's browser and then select IT and TOOLS-Remove Advanced Cadence.

Did that work?

If so, it confirms my (or should confirm) idea that you had cadence (or timecode) breaks.

If so, do the above for all your clips.

Good luck,

CaptM

Ok, so it didn't work, let me explain what i did and let make sure that i didn't make any mistakes:

1) i pulled the footage into a 29.97 sequence

2) I cut out a section of the clip (didn't set any IN/OUT points, just cut out a section of it)

3) highlighted the cut out clip and selected FILE>EXPORT>QUICKTIME MOVIE, then i checked the "self contained" box (should i have the "recompress" box checked? or does that matter?) and saved it to my scratch

4) dragged it back into my browser, selected only that clip and went TOOLS>REMOVE ADVANCED PULLDOWN...and i got the same error message.

Maybe i did something wrong, or maybe there is something else that happened. I am going to keep on trying some different things, in the meantime, let me know what you think.

oh, i just thought of this, could it be a setting on my camera? i'll look through there but from what i know about the DVX-100B, when recording in 24p or 24pa it should make all appropriate adjustments for you. should be Non-Drop in 24pa correct? let me know if you know of a setting that needs to be on or adjusted on the camera to allow everything to be sent through the firewire. That was just a thought.

Thanks!

one more real quick question:

When i go to the Audio/Video Settings and click on the Capture Presets tab, i chose: DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal, and if i click edit on there under the "Quicktime Video Settings" there is an "Advanced" button on the bottom right, when i choose that, it brings up a "Video" window with the Compression tab highlighted and under the "Compressor" section in that window, the SCAN MODE says Interlaced, and the Aspect Ratio is 4:3. Should the SCAN MODE say Progressive? and if i filmed in SQUEEZE mode should the Aspect ratio be 16:9?

Let me know, not sure exactly what i would be changing if i changed those.

ok, so I have been trying it for some time now and i finally got it to work!!! I changed the settings that i mentioned in my last post and i aslo changed the DEVICE CONTROL PRESETS to FireWire NTSC NDF. those are the changes that i made and i re-captured and it was captured in 23.98! that's what the vid rate shows 23.98 and i can find no interlaced footage!

Just to clarify, since the captured clip is 23.98 i do NOT need to do the REMOVE ADVANCED PULLDOWN in the TOOLS menu correct?

Thank you very much for your help CAPTM! i learned quite a bit just doing what you asked and playing around with different things!

Thanks again!!!
