24p workflow starting in PPrp CS3

Guys. I read tons of threads on the subject but wanted to get some specific questions answered in the one thread to help me and others. Maybe i overlooked a thread so if i did, please point me in the right direction for help.

I shot footage in 24p and also had some already shot footage shot at 30fps.

I captured in PPRO using the 24p preset.

Once i did this in PPRO i saved my work and just opened the PPRO file in AE. Is this the best thing to do?

Then i imported into AE the other footage shot in 30fps, created a new comp, then added this footage to my main comp where it needs to be.

I interpreted the footage shot in 24p and everything looks fine. I wasnt able to figure out what to do to get the 30fps footage looking the best in a now 24p timeline.

Anyways, i added my effects, added the audio and exported as a high quality avi. Then from here on i am stumped.

Was exporting a high quality avi the NEXT BEST step.

My final output is DVD. I have sorenson squeeze and Encore for this procedue.

Should I take this AVI and drop it into sorenson or is it just easy enough to drop it into Encore for transcoding.

Last time i used a 24p video in Encore it came out super jittery, i was crunched for time so i just let it go. I wasn't sure what happened between the great export out of AE to Encore.

I know this is a lot but just looking for some professional help.

From AE you can directly use the MainConcept plugin (included) to render an MPEG for Encore, to skip the AVI render (Unless Fully Uncompressed) is a great what to overcome alot of issues you can encounter.

If you are telling Encore to compress the moive (rather than give it a compliant mpeg) you need to hevierly control the way inwhich it encodes progressive content, or are you using squeeze to do that part ? give us more of an idea of setting throughout your entire pipeline and then maybe we offer more specific solutions.

As far as getting your 30 (60i I assume?) footage to work in your 24p timeline, there's a great little free plugin for after effects on the videocopilot.net website. Frame Rate Converter. it'll get the footage to all look the same. Not the fastest process in the word but then again, it never is.

Not sure why you don't just render MPGs with After Effects at that point. If your timeline is 24p just go to the settings and add pulldown (WSSWW or whatever, it doesn't really matter). Then render it out as 29.97 which it will set it at automatically if you added pulldown.

Of course I'm not sure if I completely understand your situation, but that's my two cents.

thanks guys. i forgot about kramers converter.

phantom, i guess thats my main question. which program am i better off using for the compression. directly in AE, Squeeze, or Encore. which program will give me the best resolution..

I tried using squeeze but i was ocnfused. even if i have 24p footage my final out will still be 29.970? The fps in squeeze never changed.

what exact info do you want me to provide and i can? (about my workflow) thanks guys

Techincally AE, Prem and Encore all using the same plugin to render MPEG2,

Forget Squeeqe for now and Render your Mpegs straight out of AE Pick the MPEG2-DVD Preset in the render Q and it up like this

Quality 5
NTSC
23.976
Field Order NONE (It should do that automaticly)

The other option is aspect ratio and its up to you with that one (Dependin on your content )

And your bitrate settings are up at you,

These should directly import into encore (it will make in M2v and a Wav) and the only compression encore will do is the audio

thanks for that. but now the issue is.. when i bring my mpeg into encore, i dont have the option of selecting 23.976. the dvd setting is set to 29.970. and when i scrub through the timeline there is interlacing.

AHHH, this is crazy. My final output is DVD. but does DVD for CPU or Home make a difference on export. Thanks
