24p timeline won't output to firewire

i am using fcp5 and i have a dvcam connected via firewire and an ntsc monitor connected to the cam for preview. firewire is working fine for capture and for playback of 29.97 timelines but when playing back a 24fps timeline i can only see the image on my monitor when playback has stopped. no continuous playback except for audio. i kind of understand why this is happening. the dvcam and the monitor want to see 60i, not 24p but won't fcp insert pulldown in realtime to be able to preview? i looked in prefs and the manual but couldn't find the answer. if i take my 24p clip and throw it on a 29.97 timeline and render, then i can see playback on the monitor but this is a pain in the butt. i want to just be able to view the output of my 24fps timeline on my monitor all the time. anyone else have this problem? or better yet, a solution?

It can output with 2:3:2:3 pulldown added in realtime if your computer is fast enough.
You timeline/sequnce should be at 23.98 to start with.

System settings -> Playback control

yeah, did that but still no luck. i looked in the manual and the pulldown option is supposed to show up in the "RT" tab on the timeline but it's not there.... my timeline is at 23.98 and i would hope my system is fast enough. G5 quad 2.5ghz with 1.5GB ram..... any idea why that setting wouldn't show up in the RT tab? same story on my other machine - imac G5 2.0GHZ with 1.5GB ram....

this is even weirder. i can scrub the timeline as fast as i want and that shows up in realtime on the monitor. it's just when i play in realtime that i get audio ok but no moving image. i tried with my cheap cam that i use as a deck as well as the dvx as well as another digital 8 firewire cam. same deal either way.

i'm stumped.

yeah it is. is the real time pulldown dependent on your video card? my card is good but i am running 2 displays which may be bogging it down....

ok. figured it out. although the fcp manual says that the pulldown options will show up if you are using 24, 23.98, 25 etc., the only setting that works is 23.98. in fact, you have to create the sequence at 23.98 for it to work. before the update, there was no "dv 23.98" preset so i would create my sequences at "dv 24" and then change the timebase to 23.98 in the sequence settings. seems like one would be the same as the other but not so. a sequence created in this manner will not give me the pulldown options. now i create a new sequence at 23.98 and there are the pulldown options of 2:3:2:3, 2:3:3:2, and 2:2:2:4 and more importantly, it works and i can finally see my 23.98 projects on my external monitor. so now on my old projects, i have to create a new sequence at 23.98 and copy and paste all of the content from the old sequence. if this seems way more complicated than it should be then join the club. uggghh... i spent 2 days on this. all's well that ends well i guess....
