24p - Time Laps

A time lapse is created by taking a frame at a larger interval than normal. Say for example 1 frame every 2 seconds (.5p, I suppose you could say .)

24p, by definition won't yeild a time lapse because it's running at the regular rate of film.

Unless your question was how to make a time lapse in a 24p timeline. In which case there's many different options, software, in-camera, etc. I would suggest you do a search, it's been covered many times.

If you have existing 24p footage, simply find a way to play the footage at a higher frame rate. For example, dropping the 24p footage into a 30fps timeline would give you 1.2 times normal play rate. Drop it into a 60fps timeline would give you a play speed of 2.5 times normal speed. Essentially you are pressing fast forward.

So if you want to work on a 24p timeline, you would need to plug in that variable first, and figure out at what speed you want your timelapse to be at, then figure out at what fps would you need to film at. For example, if you wanted 2x speed, you would need to film at 12fps. 4x speed would be 6fps, and 12x would be obtained at 2fps.

Now, say you wanted to work on a 24p timeline and had existing 24p footage that you wanted timelapsed. That I dont know how you would do, but my guess would be to drop x number of frames and digitally blend the frames (e.g. the "Speed" setting in FCP). This will result in an ugly timelapse, I'm guessing, but I see no other way of doing it in my mind. If you want a timelapse, do it right when filming.

Cristina-
One of the problems in these general forums is that there are many different ways to do any one thing. The real question is how to do 24p time-lapse with what you have available?

So, what camera are you shooting with?
What are you shooting?
Over what period of time?
Day or night?
Any special effects you want to accomplish?
