24p substitute

hey guys, i'm new to the forum.
i do freelance videography using a sony dcr-vx2100 and I was wondering if anyone would recommend using the 1/30 shutter speed to substitute for 24p. It looks very similar but I have yet to see what the footage looks like in FCP.
If anyone could give me any pointers I'd be stoked. Encoding to 24p gives mixed results so if the 1/30 shutter speed gets the bump from any of you all that'd be great.
Thanks guys.

Actually the 1/30 shutter speed on the Sony camcorders is a really nice temporal substitute for 30p and looks great as far as framerate is concerned. The one huge drawback is that it cuts the effective vertical resolution in half because it interpolates the data from a single field into the timespan of a whole frame. So the picture quality will be that of a 720x240 image rather than 720x480.

The tradeoff in resolution might be worth it if you really like the look and I tend to like the look so I would recommend it.

Just as a visual reference, here is a link to some Volcanic Legacy footage that was shot on a Sony DCR VX1000 using the 1/30 shutter speed. All of the live /real world footage was shot using that setting ....

Of course, the video is compressed for the web, so much detail is lost, but still maybe it can help :)

Hey, just wanted to chime in. I have used 1/30 with a GL2 a number of times and found it to work well mimicking 24p. Definitely not the same though.

For me a better solution was Gramme Nattress's 'Film' plugins. They de-interlace and create 24p footage from 60i. Yes its softer, but looks more 'cinematic' than 1/30 60i. Beware, it requires lots of rendering!
