24P Sequence Settings for smooth Slow Motion - Post if you know

I have searched everywhere for someone to post the proper settings.

If the post is out there, i apologize.

I shot footage in 24PA with my DVX100B and want to bring it into Final Cut Pro Studio, and slow it down to about 30%

Can anyone post the perfect way to do this?

Thanks in advance :)

You've got the cart a bit in front of the horse. Let's step back a bit.

Since you shot 24pA we must assume you wanted to edit in 24 fps sequence.

Now, let's say you take the footage you shot, remove the cadence, stick it in a 24 fps sequence and want to now slow it down. Am I right so far?

Well, you are really stuck with just using FCPs time mapping and slowing it down. It will look just that good and no better. It isn't BAD, but with advanced planning it could have been MUCH better.

Here's what I always do... I always shoot in 24pA too, but I also keep an extra tape with me that I shoot 60i on. I later convert that to 60 fps and then take that to conform it to 24fps giving me a very nice frame for frame slow motion. That technique is involved and requires some compressor skills... I actually use Shake to do it.

An easier way, but less effective (but better than what you are trying to do) is to shoot 30p mode on that second tape and use cinema tools to conform that to 24. Will slow it down by 20% when you then drop it into your 24fps sequence.

I hope that helps.

BTW - I think this is the right link... Give it a second to load...

That was a test short I did where I used the 60i technique for slo-mo. Happens about 1:30 into it.

Sorry if the link doesn't work, I'm on my iTouch in a hotel right now and can't check.

IF you want, search YouTube for "captmench" and you should see the movie Fountain in there too.

I really like that way of getting slow motion.

I really appreciate you taking the time to help out like that, as it means the world to most of us.

Bringing the extra tape idea is a good one if you know what you are about to shoot....trouble is, i shoot everything 24p, and when i get home, i do not know i want slow mo until i see it.

Maybe i am shooting a concert, and someone blows a kiss to Classified.
Maybe just filming a short, and when you get back, you see a scene that might add more to the emotion with music and slo mo.

The problem i am having is that ghosting effect you see when you slow down 24p.

Maybe my capture and sequence settings are not as good as they should be?

Holy crap that fountain footage looked amazing.

What was your shutter speed set at, or what was your "F" set at?

Wow, nice work!

Hey thanks.

Your capture settings should be dv NTSC adv pulldown removal. That's about all you can do.

Once you apply the timing you could try turning frame blending on and off see which looks better. Thing is, FCP needs to create frames that don't actually exist so, yes, they'll tend to look fuzzy.

As for how I shot the fountain... I think I cranked the shutter to 250 or maybe even more. F stop was not really rel'vant. I just had the big nd filter on and cranked iris to a half stop below zebraing.

In post I added the color treatment and vignetting -- mainly because I usually uprez the final project to HD and the more I crush it the better it holds up to the conversion. Or at least eases the harshness of the conversion.

Here's what I did: Zachary and I went to the fountain. I set up the tripod and shot about 5 minutes of him messing around in 24pA mode. After I thought I had enough stuff to cover the intro stuff (the stuff I imagined as 'thru MY eyes') I switched out the tape and shot about ten minutes of the other stuff (the 'thru HIS eyes'). I knew that I wanted a lot of close up stuff plus the fountain by itself. So when I switched the tape I also changed the shutter and the scene to 60i (actually, 30i on the dvx).

I always switch tapes becase the 24pA cadence is very fragile and would cause headaches later if I kept switching scenes on the same tape... Something I learned thru experience!!

Yup- that was it.

To finish my answer... Then I set up two sequences. A 23.98 and a 29.97. I edited the intro on the 23.98 with the material I shot in 24pA mode and then used the 29.97 seq to 'find' the stuff I wanted to conform to 24. That way I wasn't converting the entire capture... Which takes a lot of time. Once I had a good idea of what material I wanted to use from the second tape I sent only those clips into the conversion process. Then, once they were 23.98 I did the final edit in the 23.98 sequence.
