24p Rendering

New user here. Just shot my first real project with new dvx camera set at the F5 scene set (24p) and I am capturing on FCP with the preset DV-NTSC 24P (23.98).
Question: When moving clip to time line I have to render. Is this normal and if it is why? Is the rendering removing the pulldown or am I doing something wrong. Thanks for your help.

The format the DVX100 uses is NTSC-DV on the tape. You need to capture in NTSC-DV first, then use Cinema Tools to reconvert to 24p (it will bring it back to original frame acurate 24p). But capturing in 24p is NOT the way to do it. You're rendering because you have 60i footage in a 24p timeline. See the tutorial in the Articles section on how to do this.

Good information. It’s great to have this resource for us new kids on the block.
New question.

Using Cinema Tools seems to be quite confusing. Will there be any problems if I just capture and edit without using Cinema Tools? I have limited time to work on this project.

Umm... what about the fact that F5 setting is merely giving the 24p look without introducing pulldown. So it's just plain old 29.97.

Capture it with the normal capture setting of 29.97.
Have your sequence settings for 29.97.

You will have no problems at all with working with the footage or viewing on an external monitor and you will be treating the project just like any other 29.97ntsc project.

But if you aim to get true 24fps you need to do a reverse telecine in Cinema tools. Beware that this can cause "frame overlapping".
