24p Pulldown Problems... help!

Hey guys.. I've searched for a while on this topic but I cant really find the answer im looking for. I just shot a music video on both Super 16 film and the DVX100..(24p Advanced) I'm editing on premiere pro 1.5 with a 24p timeline. Problem is... I don't know the correct way to get rid of the 2:3 pulldown, or inverse telecine. I know its no problem with FCP but i have a PC and its a little more complex it seems.

It looks like Adobe Premiere automatically removes the pulldown once i put the DVX footage in timeline(after capturing with Adobe) But then i captured the 16mm footage via mini dv using the DVX - and i put it in the timeline and it looks strobed/slower. It doesnt look like adobe de-interlaces it.

Isn't there a program that you can run the .avi files through after capturing and it removes the pulldown? I could have sworn i stumbled across one a year ago or so.. i just can't find the name of it.

Any help would be appreciated... if all else fails, i'm buying a mac. Honestly, I'm looking for a standard way of capturing 24pA footage from the DVX for PC. thanks!

Boils down to the fact that Ppro does not give you the option to NOT use pulldown. If you import 24p footage, you have to edit it as 24p. Thus, you can not combine 24p footage and 29.97 footage on the same timeline. you can either:

1. recompress your DVX footage in after effects so that the fields "reset" to standard interlaced, then use those clips

2. perhaps you can use DVFilmmaker to extract the 24 frames from your 16mm footage. I have no experience with the program though.

I use DVfilm Maker and it works pretty well. I just open the .avi file into Maker and remove the pulldown and then import the 24p quicktime file into premiere. Works for me.

I had to edit 24pA video on PP1.5, and found the strobing very irritating. I eventually switched to usig 30p, which actually gave a smoother look. But I did find a way to trick PP1.5 to think that 24pA (or 24p) video is actually 30i.

Open a new sequence and put 1 or more frame of 30i video at the beginning of the sequence. Then add your 24pA video to the sequence. Export it to a file as a movie. Then import the movie. PP1.5 only looks at the first frame, and will determine that this video is 30i. It will not perform the 2:3 pull down. The only drawback is that you will lose your original timecodes.

If you need to keep the original timecodes, then you may want to try recording some 30i (bars or video) at the beginning of the tape, then start capture at the 30i portion. I haven't tried this but I think it should work.

Interesting... I will try this tomorrow.

Record 30 seconds of 60i
then record my 24p
then capture the entire tape as 1 clip
see how it handles it

Re: 24p Pulldown Problems... help!

This is very surprising.

I ran the test and sure enough I was able to play my 24p-normal footage as standard 29.97.

I recording 30 sec. of color bars in 60i, then switched it over to F5, then recorded some material. Ppro thought it was standard 60i, did NOT remove the pulldown, and DID play it as 29.97... thus no strobing, etc.

Kevin, I hope you are reading this. Will post on Adobe

Imerio, I'm glad to hear that you proved my theory. Again, you don't even need a 30 second leader. PP1.5 just looks at the first frame to determine what type of video the clip is.

Re: 24p Pulldown Problems... help!

this is interesting, unfortunately the 120 hours of documentary footage I have do not have xx seconds of 60i footage on the tapes... but at least for small projects in the preset this can be a work around

Re: 24p Pulldown Problems... help!

I assume that you taped some bars at the beginning of all of your tapes. Well, you can just go back to the beginning of each tape and re-record a few seconds of bars at 60i.

Or, if you've already captured and edited the video, you can just add 1 (or more) frame of 60i to the beginning of your entire timeline, export it to a file, then import it back in and remove the leader. No more strobing, but you lose your original time codes.
