24p problems in Premiere Pro 1.5, please help

Hello, I’m editing a friends wedding currently on Premiere Pro 1.5, the wedding was shot with a DVX100 in 24p mode, I don’t know if it was using Mode F5 or Mode F6 because I’m not the one who shot the wedding.

This is my first time working with 24p footage and it hasn’t been the most pleasant. My current problem is that when I watch the footage on the timeline, about every 4th or 5th frame I get a weird comb pattern on the frame, like interlacing lines or TV scan lines. I’ve attached two pics to this post, one with the scan lines and one without the scan lines. Now when watching the footage the scan lines on every 4th or 5th frame become very bothersome, like a pulsing.

So next I thought maybe its because I imported the footage in a 60i project. So I tried every other possible option from importing the footage in a 60i project to every Panasonic 24p preset and still I get these scan lines. It’s driving me up the wall.

Has anyone else had this problem? What should I do?

It might also be good to note that I’m importing the footage with a Sony Camera rather then the dvx100, also whoever shot the footage used the 16x9 squeeze on the dvx and i've been using the 4:3 presets, my video card is a Radeaon 9600 Series.

Also if possible I would like to be editing this 24p footage in a 29.97 project but I keep hearing that I can’t because PP 1.5 removes the 3:2 pulldown or something like that.

Please help

Yeah The problem is......
You gotta shoot 24PA!!!
pro freaks out on normal 24P.
shoot in advance and you will have no problem!
hope this helps!

Ok, Thanks, that will save me in the future, but is their any way to use the current 24p footage that i have without having to see the scanlines?

Also if i do shoot in 24pa, will it be possible to edit in a 29.97 timeline?

Thanks

As for the current footage im not sure.
I use magicbullet software sometimes this helps to cover up stuff I have shot in REG. 24P. Due to the Heavy Filter.

But yes once shot in 24pa you pretty much have free roam.

Hope that helps.

Welcome to a very bad world of 24p in PPro1.5

Long story short, a large number of us have been complaining to Adobe about this for the past 9 or 10 MONTHS. Adobe has "unofficially" responded to us once in all this time. The response was a very crude work-around for this problem. Look at the Adobe forums here:

http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?128@29.MoA2d6XXKdB.3008903@.3bb49731

Using the ProcAmp filter to limit the range of brightness in all of yourr footage should stop the strobing. Unfortunately you will have to render every frame of video that you put on the timeline with this filter.

It is very unfortunate, and Adobe has already lost many people to other programs specifically because of this problems.

And no, at this point you cannot combine 24p or 24pa footage with 29.97 footage unless you can make Ppro stop removing the pulldown. Currently, if you digitize using the MSDV codec, you cannot stop PPro from remiving the pulldown. You can keep it from removing the pulldown by using another DV codec that does not support 24p (such as the Canopus or Matrox DV codecs). But you will need to buy seperate hardware to use these codecs.

Adobe is going to be releasing a 1.5.1 HDV update soon and many of us are holding our breath that it will secretly fix thiss 24p problem. (Adobe will not admit that there is a problem, so they will not admit a fix).

If it does not fix the problem there are a couple roads to take. Either purchase a Matrox rtx.100 and use the Matrox codec and skip the whole 24p issue all togther. The other option is to ditch PPro all together and use any other program, cuzz all the rest seem to work fine.

Re: 24p problems in Premiere Pro 1.5, please help

Thank for the feedback guys, so if my footage is shot in 24pa then will i have the freedom to edit in 29.97 or will i have to edit in a 24 preset.

And also their was something i read on this forum earlier that said something about being able to import your 24p footage into After Effects and then export out at 29.97 and After Effects will re apply a 3:2 pulldown. Is this True?

Thanks

Re: 24p problems in Premiere Pro 1.5, please help

I have had no luck with 24pa footage in a 29.97 project... but in a bind i did once import my 24p footage into after effects, and spit it back out, only so that PPro would not recognize the 24p pattern and treat it as 29.97. But this costs some quality loss.

If anyone knows of a better way, do tell ;)

Re: 24p problems in Premiere Pro 1.5, please help

Well, as for my current situation, being that i have to edit 24p footage, i've actually found two current solutions which i can take, one is to edit the 24p footage in my old version of Premiere 6.0, the program just treats it as 29.97.

I also did another test which may be very useful in the future if i have to work with 24p instead of 24pa in Pp 1.5.

I took the original dv tape that the 24p footage was recorded on and i linked up two cameras. One Camera with the 24p footage dv tape and the second camera with a fresh new dv tape. I made a duplicate of the tape using the two camera's and when i import the duplicated dv tape into premiere pro in a 60i project it treats the 24p footage as 29.97. I'm guessing because when i made the copy it lost the 24 pattern, seeing how it was copied from one camera to another using composite cables.

Well thats actually a solution some of you may want to take, ofcourse it would be a little time consuming having to make copys of all the tapes you plan on digitizing but hey, it works if your wanting to edit in a 29.97 timeline.

Anyhow hoping that the next version of Premiere will update these current problems and we can freely edit 24p or 24pa footage in a 24 timeline or a 29.97 timeline without having to resort to creative but time consuming tactics.

Cheers

Re: 24p problems in Premiere Pro 1.5, please help

did you use analog (rca or svideo) cables when you made the duplicate tape?

Re: 24p problems in Premiere Pro 1.5, please help

I used RCA cables becasue the camera i was copying to only had rca support while the other did have svideo.

I know it's a generation loss, but if your stuck in a situation where you have to edit 24p and at 29.97 because you have to mix with 60i footage, this may be a crappy solution.

Have any of you used this method before?
