24p or 30p?

I was wondering what would be a better frame rate for low light? Also would I use the standard shutter speeds of 1/48 and 1/60? Or what?

Thanks Guys Max.

24p, because then your shutter speed is 1/48th instead of 1/60th.

1/48th for 24, 1/60th for 30.

24p is going to be better for low light because their are less "Frames" to expose per second. So more light per frame with 24p than 30p. Same amount of light with 30 fps equals less exposure per frame.

Right - 24p "sees" more light.

And you may already know the following, but just in case:

Be careful with 24fps panning speeds - too fast will "strobe" unpleasantly, although it's worth noting that it tends to look worse on computer LCDs/NLEs than it does later on DVD/NTSC TV or projector. You can also use a 1/24 frame rate for even more light efficiency, but it will be susceptible to intra-frame blurring with any more than a little movement of the camera or subject. And beware that autofocus will suck at 24fps!

Faster shutter speed doesn't technically make the image darker… it just not as bright as it is when using a slower shutter speed. :p

A higher shutter gives more detail, though. That weird 'fast, but not fast' motion you see in some movie battle scenes like Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan, where you see the mud flying in the air in detail. You can use this higher shutter if you are using enough light!

Shutter speed affects image brightness because the longer it's open the more light is allowed in. Just like in a still camera, higher f-stops and faster shutter speeds reduce the exposure, and conversely, increase it. So yes, a faster shutter speed will look "darker", all else being equal. The desired balance of focus (or blur), exposure and depth of field is what choosing basic camera settings is all about.

I see, thanks again. Oh and how (using 24p as an example) the shutter speeds start like 1/6 1/12 1/24 1/48 but then it jumps to 1/60, 1/100 and so on? I am using the Canon HV30.

Thanks a lot!! Hey your from the HV30 Forum. Haha.
Don't unveil my identity! Noooo…

1/60 is primarily for 60i. As for 1/100, 1/250 and so on, I think they just become arbitrary values after that, but those slower shutter speeds are generally fractions of framerates (1/6, 1/12, etc.)
