24p in DVD Studio Pro 5

I'm about to burn my first disc with 24p Advanced footage on it, and I'm not sure if DVD Studio Pro is handling it properly. The .m2v (encoded with Compressor) plays fine at 24 in QuickTime, but DVD Studio Pro sees it as 29.97.

Watching the video in the DVDSP viewer (not the simulator), I see doubled frames (2:2:2:4), but I'm not sure if this is just DVDSP's way of simulating 29.97 playback, or whether it is really reading my 23.97 asset as 29.97.

According to the manual (p49) : "24 fps assets show as their display rate setting when viewed in the Track Editor. This makes them appear as if they were at the NTSC or PAL frame rate. You can confirm they are actually 24 fps by selecting them in the Assets tab and verifying the frame rate in the Asset Inspector."

But when I do this, the Inspector says it's 29.97, as well.

So, my question is: should I be seeing 23.97 in the Inspector? If so, what might I have done wrong? If not, I take it the manual is just wrong.

I'm assuming the sequence was 23.98 and that you exported from FCP to Compressor?
Check your settings in compressor. Select the video configuration you're using (60min high quality) and go through the tabs. Frame rate has a few options. One is automatic so it will do the right thing with 29.97 or 23.98. If you want to make sure it's encoded correctly edit the setting and save as a new default. Set specifically to 24. Auto shoudl work but if for some reason the clisp are 24 but are being seen as 29.97 then you'd have problem.
When you open in QT what does it say? Get info, video-> frame rate.

The sequence in Final Cut is 23.98, Compressor is set to 23.98, and QuickTime Pro reports it as 24 (it doesn't account for drop-frame so this is to be expected). Stepping through the frames at each stage confirms this.

Only DVD Studio Pro reports it as 29.97.

For the benefit of all, I'll answer my own question, now that I've actually gone and done some experimenting. The misreported footage plays back at 23.98, with correct pulldown.

In short, the Asset Inspector is wrong. The way the manual says is definitely how it ought to work, but it doesn't. So, for those, like me, reading the manual, know this:

The Asset Inspector reports 23.98 assets as 29.97, even though it shouldn't.

Just be aware if footage comes from QT (and not Compressor) into DVD Studio Pro (at least 4) the fps won't be correct. (Do a search in the Help menu. ) Not sure if they've fixed this in 5.
