24p in and out

A few quik questions about premiere pro's ability to edit in true 24p.
-When you import the 24p or 24pa footage from the dvx, does it automatically remove the pulldown for you and import the clip into the 24p timeline? Or do you have to do somehting manually to achieve this?
-When finshed editing in a 24p timeline.....if you just use their media encoder to export a dvd file, then burn that to a dvd, will it be a progressive 24p dvd? Or are there other steps that i am missing?

Thank you very much

Re: 24p in and out

The following answers are for PPro 1.5. Version 1 is different.

When you import the 24p or 24pa footage from the dvx, does it automatically remove the pulldown for you and import the clip into the 24p timeline?
It automatically removes the pulldown. In fact, it is *so* automatic, that some users are unhappy.

You can place the footage in either a 24p timeline or a 60i. You would think PPro would be smart enough to *not* remove the pulldown when you use it in 60i. But no, it removes the pulldown and forces you to render so it can re-add the pulldown it just removed.

But if you want to stick to 24p editing, it shouldn't be too bad.

When finshed editing in a 24p timeline.....if you just use their media encoder to export a dvd file
Inexplicably, Adobe did not provide a 24p preset for MPEG encoding. You can create your own:
1) Select MPEG2-DVD as your format
2) Set Frame Rate to 23.976
3) Set Field Order to Progressive. (This might be automatic.)
4) Under GOP settings, set N frames to 12. This will keep your GOPs 1/2 second long, which is standard.

A couple of additional notes:
First, when you do your capture make sure you do scene detect so that each shot is a separate clip. Some users have reported confused pulldown removal when the tape is captured as one big clip.

Second, please note that PPro's 24p implemenation has a bug where overexposed areas (such as a bright sky) will strobe. This primarily happens with 24p Normal (F5) footage. If you shoot 24p Advanced (F6) and export to a 24p DVD, you probably won't see this bug. (Although you might see it if you exported your 24p Advanced to a 60i DVD or tape.)

is there any remedy to this? i was just about to post on that. i shot on 24p normal (f5) and it looks pretty nasty. what should i do? my project is due in a couple of days?
can i export it as an edl or aaf and bring it into premiere 6 and output from there?

any help is appreciated.

Re: 24p in and out

Hi John,
The strobing occurs because the PPro-assembled frames are clipping at 100 IRE.

I haven't tried teh EDL/aal route, so I can't comment there.

Luckily there are workarounds in PPro 1.5. Adobe refuses to officially acknowledge the problem, but someone posted in the Adobe PPro forum that you can apply the ProcAmp effect to limit the luminance of the non-clipped frames. I've found the Broadcast Colors effect will do the same. Just apply it to the strobing footage and it should fix things by clipping all frames to the same 100 IRE level.

Please please please let Adobe know you are having problems. Please go to Adobe's own Premiere Pro forum ( www.adobeforums.com ) and complain loudly -- post a message in the thread labelled PPro 1.5 BUG - 24p Normal Handeled Incorrectly.

Please note you will have to register to post on the forum. But we need to let Adobe know we are dissatisfied with PPro 1.5. They advertised 24p support, and it's there but buggy.

Here's a direct link to the thread. I don't know if some of this cgi stuff in the url changes from day to day, so you may need to find it on your own.

Re: 24p in and out

Kevin,

I just posted a new reply to the infamous 24p thread at Adobe. If you go to the dvx under supported devices for PPro, they fully say that it has problems. Check it out.
