24p in After Effects

Hello,

I just got my DVX and I'm trying to figure out the proper settings for editing in After effects. Should I set the frame rate in the composition settings to 23.97? And/Or should I adjust the frame rate of each clip in the interpret footage window. I've been using After Effects for years but always @ 29.97 frame rate. ???

Re: 24p in After Effects

If your footage is shot at 24PA, you should definitely interpret the footage to remove the pulldown. Then it would be true 24 fps without any interlaced frames. If your footage is 24P, go with 29.97, there will still be some interlaced frames there but it will have the feeling of 24fps

Re: 24p in After Effects

After Effects can't remove standard 2:3 pulldown, but it can remove advanced 2:3:3:2 pulldown? I don't use it (Commotin Pro), but I find that hard to believe.

Re: 24p in After Effects

It can most definitely remove standard 3:2 pulldown. It has for a few versions now.

;D CAVEMAN

p.s. If you're looking for a good workflow between say Final Cut and AE what you want to do with 24PA footage is Export Quicktime Movie (not QT conversion) from a 23.98 timeline. This saves a reference file with a much smaller size. Import clip into AE project. Drop in a 23.98 timeline and voila it does everything else for you. No need to interpret footage. I'm presupposing that you've removed pulldown upon capturing the footage.
Hope this helps for FC users out there.

Re: 24p in After Effects

thanks for the info - cavemen, do you have the lowdown on pulldowns? i feel dumb for asking - im about to do some research into the topic but like to hear what you have to say as well as it relates to AE

Re: 24p in After Effects

When you all talk about editing in AE are you talking about importing just the clips you are applying effects too and then when your done in AE import that back into your NLE to finish editing? I am new to AE and I have yet to start learning the software!
