24p Film within 59.94 Video File

I have some archival footage that was shot as 24fps on 16mm film. Somewhere along the line it was transferred to 59.94 720p video. I have been trying to get this material to play properly with no results.
Exporting it out as 24p does not work.

The video plays as follows:

Frame, Ghosted Frame, Frame, Doubled Frame, Ghosted Frame, Frame (starts over)
So - FGFDG - in my own made up acronym.

I have tried all of the guess 24p pulldown and WWWSW etc methods in after effects to try to get this cleared up and it's not working. The 24p footage is in there, I just can't get it to play properly without ghosting or doubling of frames.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Thank you.

What have you been trying to get it to play properly in?

So if I'm understanding you correctly, the footage, frame-by-frame, looks like this?

A -- A/B -- B -- C -- C -- C/D -- D . . . and then starts over with A?

The problem is, 24 fps film converted to 60p should have no "ghosted" or "blended" frames. It should have repeated frames only, and the pattern should be:

A - A - A - B - B - C - C - C - D - D

or

A - A - B - B - B - C - C - D - D - D

Which are both the same pattern, just starting on a different frame.

The pattern you're describing looks like a very poor telecine, where someone used frame blending when they definitely should not have. Also, the pattern is not a standard 3:2 or 2:3 pattern. It sort of looks like what you'd get if you did a film telecine to 60i video, and then "deinterlaced" that to 60p using frame blending. If that's what happened, I'm not sure you're going to be able to pull clean 24p out of it without a lot of manual work, if you can do it at all.

Hi David,

Yes I think you have it right, using the letter method I went frame by frame several times and got this.

A -- A/B -- B -- B/C -- C -- C

(the second C starts as A the next time around, A has a doubled A before it)

So . . .

A - A/B - B - B/C - C - C - C/D - D - D/E - E - E - E/F?

Do you happen to know how this footage got transferred, and by whom?

Yeah that's it.

It was shot on 16mm film, 24fps, it was copied to I think, DVCPRO or HDCAM tape by a company that no longer exists, and then sent to NASA, who in turn captured it from tape into this mess that it is in today. I'm trying to get a hold of a better source format, but that is a very slow process so I was hoping there might be an automated way to fix this.

There's a trace of a 3:2 pattern there, but I doubt very much any software is going be able to pull clean frames from it. Best you can do is keep trying to remove a 3:2 pulldown and systematically try starting on different frames.
