24P & DVD

Hey all,

Ok. Getting ready to do my first real edit in 24p.
The TRV is ready to put out. Tape is in... but the Mac... well, I thought the Mac was ready until I saw the 2 capture settings:

Do I use the FCPHD sequence setting of 23.98 or 24?

Re: 24P & DVD

Unless you're going to film, use 23.98. But from your title it looks like you are going to DVD, so use 23.98.

Re: 24P & DVD

I have recently had a few problems in this regard, so maybe this will help you avoid them:

I just finished a DVD project. Everything was shot w/DVX100 @ 24PA. When I captured the footage, I thought I used a setting that would automatically remove the advanced pulldown frames. It didn't. My footage came up as 29.97 instead of 23.98 on my asset list, which I really didn't notice until I began editing and realized that merely dragging a clip into a 23.98 timeline required rendering (?). Makes everything look flickery in a Super8 kind of way. Yuck.

My solution was to take each clip and select "remove advanced pulldown." That worked without a hitch for 80% of the captured clips, but 20% would not convert over. I ran "mark long frames" and, sure enough, each of these clips had long frames (usually the first or last frame, or both). I trimmed them in QT Pro and reconnected them. Walaah! Everything 23.98, and dragging a clip into the timeline required no rendering.

Of course, aside from the obvious "filmlike" qualities of 24p, having 20% fewer frames to edit/render and encode to .m2v isn't a bad deal.

So learn from my ineptitude. If you capture 24PA footage and you THINK you are removing the pulldown frames, but once you import them into your project you find the item properties listing for fps is "29.97", select them and opt to "remove advanced pulldown." You can select many clips at once and the process will work for any of them which do not have "long frames" (which understandably causes a cadence screw-up in the pulldown detection).

Here is a follow-up question (I don't mean to hijack the thread, but this is related): Do most of you successfully remove pulldown upon initial capture w/24PA, or do you remove it later as a second step?

Also, if you were planning only to go to DVD wouldn't you get better results by using 24p instead of 24pa on the DVX with FCP?

What do you mean by 'better results" Personally, I hate interlaced footage. It takes up more space on your hardrive, takes longer to render, you can't key it as well, etc., etc. It makes more sense to make 24fps progressive DVDs. That way if you're playing back on a progressive DVD player and Progressive scan TV, you get true 24 playback. Otherwise the DVD player will add the 3:2 pulldown on the fly anyway. The only advantage to using 24p is when you have to mix footage with other 60i stuff.

BTW, when you capture 24pA footage as 29.97, and later convert it to 23.98 in FCP, you are simply changing the header information in the quicktime file. The Quicktime movie ignores the redundant frames and plays back as 23.98. However, the file size of the quicktime remains the same. This is why I prefer to pull the footage in as 23.98. Less storage is better!

Re: 24P & DVD

Are you guys still talking about pulling in the footage AFTER you have set your project to work with 23.98 timeline?

Re: 24P & DVD

I have until recently always pulled 24pa footage in using Capture Now with the advanced pulldown removal.  This has until recently always given me pure 23.98 clips to drop in a 23.98 timeline.  This is, by the way, the best way to go if you're looking to go to progressive scan DVD or film.

Recently, however, using Capture Now has brought some clips in as 23.98, and some at 29.97.  Sometimes the same clip from the same tape will give me 29.97, and then when recaptured, it gives me 23.98.

This has frustrated me to no end, and occurs on both my laptop and desktop.  So I believe it's a FCP issue.  I would have to assume it's related to either HD or 10.3.6.  I have no PROOF of this, this is just my general impression in working through this issue, since I upgraded to both of those around the same time, but hadn't captured any more stuff until fairly recently.

There is hope, though...

I have always successfully pulled in 23.98 with the advanced pulldown removal using the batch capturing method.  So I now always batch capture my tapes and have no worries.  Still, it's rather frustrating to not have something work the way it should.

BTW, I have also posted this issue in the Apple forums with no solutions from anyone.

HTH,
Chico
