24p Back to Tape; LP or DVD?

Hi,

I am trying to output my DVX-100 24p advanced footage back to miniDV tape. Since the footage was imported into my sequence removing advanced pulldown, is there a way for Final Cut Pro to reinsert the flagged frames onto miniDV tape properly? We have taken our 23.98 footage, placed it into a 29.97 sequence, played from the sequence and manually recorded to tape using firewire which works OK. Is there a better way to "print to video" with 24p?

Also, if given a choice to project my film onto a theater screen using LP mode on a miniDV tape or DVD, which format would you choose for higher quality?

Any info much appreciated!

You shot 24pA and then edited at 29.97? That's kind of backwards isn't it? The point of 24pA is to edit at 23.98. If you want a 29.97 output then you might as well shoot at just 24p. Just confused from your wording at least.

miniDV is better than DVD. miniDV has a data rate of 25mbps (or reality sake 18-19 I think it is). DVD, even cranked isn't going to do better than 8 really (theoretically can max at 9, but that won't play in most players).

If you shot on 24pA then you should be able to output that back out and maintain everything. I've never had to do that though, so can't confirm. But surely one of the DVX folk around will chime in on that. Good luck.

cheers.

We're editing at 23.98 in the sequence, but need to project the film to an audience so we have a choice to do it on miniDV or DVD. I think it'll look better on DV, but while recording the 23.98 footage directly onto miniDV tape thru firewire, upon playback the image goes in and out, stutters, and experiences dropouts. We're running a Macbook Pro 2.16ghz Core Duo, so I don't believe this is a system speed issue. Our solution has been to place the 23.98 footage onto a 29.97 sequence and are manually recording using a DV deck which has worked OK.

Ah okay. Well I wouldn't consider the MacBook Pro the best choice for doing an output with. Unless at the very least its connected to raided hard drives. Is the footage on a raided setup? I'd want the extra juice for output. We use an XServe Raid with dual channel fibre to do our outputs and still once in a while things don't play nice.

Dropping your footage into a 29.97 timeline is not a good solution. Final Cut Pro doesn't properly add in the pulldown. If you're going to go from 23.98 to 29.97 you should do it using a video card to do the conversion (Kona LHe, Kona 3, etc.). I've never actually done the output of dropping 23.98 footage into a 29.97 timeline, so can't definitely comment on what it will do to the footage, but optimal it is not.

And while DV will definitely look better than a DVD, I'm not sure that will still hold true with the method to DV you seem to be trying. In that case I'd drop it into Compressor and author a 24P DVD. Then just make sure the equipment being used for viewing will be able to play it back at 24P. If the piece isn't too long you could really crank up the settings (6.5-7) and get a nice clean DVD. Otherwise look into a local place in town that might help with the output using the necessary hardware. Good luck.

cheers.

when you "print to video" with a 23.98 sequence, FCP will automatically add a 2:3 pulldown back in by default.

for archiving, you can have FCP use a 2:3:3:2 pulldown. but use a 2:3 for screening purposes.

Dropouts

Dropouts

For whatever reason, the printing to tape has all sorts of dropouts and stuttering, even when going 2:3:3:2 or 2:2:2:4 which should be less processor intensive. I'm assuming this is not what should happen, what are we doing wrong? Like I said, our only solution so far has been to place the 23.98 footage onto a 29.97 sequence and are manually recording using a DV deck which has worked OK.

Thanks,
Alexander

I've been dealing with the same problem. As far as I can tell from reading other posts in various forums, the DVX100 can only record thru Firewire in 29.97 mode. So, if you have a timeline using any other speed it doesn't work. My 24FPS timeline won't output the video at all to my DVX, even when the DVX is the only thing hooked to my FW port (no other hard drives, etc.) For the purposes of my project I think it will be OK, but I'd like to know if there's a way to back up 24fps footage to miniDV without investing in an expensive deck.

Just play out a 24p sequence- the pulldown is automatically added in realtime at all times. DO NOT put it onto a 29,97 timeline- that will cause massive cadence errors. Also a raid is complete overkill for DV NTSC footage.
