24p anamorphic in FCP is problematic

OK...
I haven't posted much, but this is a doozy.

I want to end up with a clean looking 16x9 anamorphic project for both tape and DVD.

My footage is 24p with an anamorphic lens. I captured in FCP applying 2:3:3:2 removal. I'm using the 23.98 setting with the anamorphic button checked for my sequence. When viewed it looks squeezed (as to be expected).

Now, the way the help file says to go back to tape for 24p anamorphic is to edit the squeezed sequence then create another sequence that is NOT anamorphic and drop the previous sequence on the new one, render and print to tape.

Sounds good until i look at the sequence on the tape... it's 16x9 with black bars on top and bottom but the footage is jerky.

The only thing i could think of that would cause this is me neglecting to put the pulldown back in before going to tape, but i thought i did that... my pulldown pattern is set to 2:3:3:2.

What's the deal?

Re: 24p anamorphic in FCP is problematic

Couple of questions back...

1) Did you shoot 24p or 24pA? The A is the 2332 pulldown, no A is 2323.
2) Your footage shouldn't look squished in FCP if your sequence has the anamorphic button clicked. The Canvas and Viewer windows should show 16:9 with no black bars. If they don't, click on the sequence in your browser and Apple-Zero it and make sure it really is checked.

Getting it back to tape: Are you looking for a finished project for tape, or do you want to back up the anamorphic sequence you just made?

DVD - no reason to nest the sequence back to a 4:3 with widescreen mask... just export as mp2 widescreen. Use DVDSP to force your tv to read it as letterbox.

Good luck,

Alright...
I shot at 24pA, so should i have used the 2332 pulldown removal while capturing?

When i do view the footage in the viewer all is good.

Now, my only problem is retaining that OH SO NICE quality when i go back to tape... it just gets jerky... and in terms of what i want to get, it's simply this -- a finished project on tape and dvd... i'll try to mp2 export to maintain the widescreen but what about the quality on the tape?

D

p.s. thanks for the quick response
