24p... again? - 24p/23.98fps timeline

Hi, I'm trying to find some info on 24p editing. But from what I read, everybody is editing 24PA in a 24fps timeline. But I'm concerned about 24P (not Advance). If I want to edit 24P in a 24fps timeline (23.98), Do I have

1- to take my footage through cinema tools to be able to edit in "true" 24P. If yes, what do I do with it (conform/ reverse telecine) - I tried conform, but the footage looked "strobby"

2-or should I just set my timeline as a "23.98" timeline and drop my footage in it...?

Sorry if it is re-said:kali: , but in what I read, we were jumping from 24p to 24pa, and I got confused at some point.

Thanks again.

Thanks Scott.

To make sure, what fps setting should be my timeline sets on?

Once I did the reverse telecine, I can put my 24p footage in the 23.98fps timeline? If I do so, the red render bar appears. Is this suppose to happen? If yes, it means I have to digitalize all my footage, then do a reverse telecine on it, then re-import it in FCP to be able to edit everything? harsh...... no, I may be not doing the right thing...

Thanks again.

G4 1.42 dual / FCP5 - Put my footage isnt 24 PA, but 24p. Why would I use the advance pulldown removal then...?

Thanks.

This is exactly why you'd want to shoot 24pa. If you knwo you want to edit 24fps (23.98 sequence) then 24pa allows the software to digitize and edit directly (with capture with advanced pulldown removal) without additional steps.

With 24p you have to capture normally. Then use Cinema Tools to reverse telcine those clips. Those newly generated clips will have to be imported into FCP.
If all was successful there shoudln't be any red render bars. Clips shoudl now be 23.98 and sequence should have been created for 23.98. If you have red check all info in the bin (stretch window out to check fps, sizes and audio)

Difference between 24p & 24pa

Difference between 24p & 24pa

timtorpedo,
Since no one seemed to lay out the truth, I will just write a brief explanation to
the issue. What's different between 24p & 24pa is what method it is using to
convert the 23.98fps footage to 29.97fps in order to record it onto NTSC tape,
which is 29.97. Shooting 24p uses 3:2 pull-down conversion, whereas 24pa
uses 2:3:3:2 pull-down conversion. 3:2 pull-down offers the best quality
for recording standard definition NTSC format, and it is the most commonly
supported method. Nevertheless, 2:3:3:2 is better than 3:2 for recording on
DV format, because 2:3:3:2 doesn't require to recompress frames. However,
when outputting editted 23.98 material for broadcasting NTSC, 2:3:3:2 offers lower quality than
3:2.
To sum up, it'd be wise to shoot in 24pa, edit, and add 3:2 pull-down when
exporting. You can add any of the pull-down methods that FCP offers in
*playback control* under *system settings.* For more, FCP manual has all the
information that you will need to understand this issue. Hope this helps.
