24fps footage playing in viewer at 30fps

I am editing in FCP 4.5 using 24pA footage off a DVX100. My sequences are at 23.98 fps, and when I show Item Properties for my clips, they show 23.98 as well. However, when I open a clip in the Viewer and run through the frames, they run all the way to 29 before flipping to 0. Is that normal and expected?

I'm having consistent crashes when trying to create motion effects on my clips, and I just noticed this, so I was wondering if it might be an issue.

Thanks in advance for any help.

24pA should be captured sing hte 2:3:3:2 Advanced Pulldown Removal. And your sequence setting should be at 23.98 (which you've got).

That's the only thing I can think of.

Try updating to Final Cut studio 2 (Final Cut 6), or even Studio 1 (Final Cut 5)

But try capturing it differently.

Hope it turns out well,

It turns out by control clicking on the timecode box in the Viewer gives me a menu, where I can change from Source Time to Clip Time. Changing it to Clip Time gets it back to 24 fps. Not sure why Source Time is in 30 fps and Clip Time is in 24 fps. All the clips are captured at 23.97 fps using Advanced Pulldown Removal.

Changing this didn't seem to solve my persistent crashing issue, so I'm investigating other options...

I'll wager it was actually skipping frames... yes, it went from :29 to :00 and not :23 to :00 but if you'd stepped thru those frame by frame you'd notice a frame missing every 4th frame.

Have fun,

You should realize the difference between 29.97, and 23.967 anyway. 29.97 is so much smoother. After editing 24p for a while then switching to 30p, well...You can really notice the difference.

Of course THAT is exactly why FILM died.

Good point.

The skipping frames isn't really 'skipping', of course. It is removing the pulldown'd frames that the camera had to add for it to 'work' on the tape media. It IS now as SHOT.

Good luck
