So what is Guts and Glory?
Guts and Glory is a new competition in which a limited number of teams of filmmakers are supplied with 100 feet of 16 mm reversal film, which they will have 24 hours to shoot (in sequence). The films must incorporate the surprise theme, location, and prop that will be revealed at the start of the competition. The films will be viewed for the first time at the opening night of the Dallas Video Festival. At the screening, these trailblazing teams will have the opportunity to do anything they want to create a live accompaniment for their films- yell, yodel, whatever. Anything goes and anything could happen as these teams battle for the distinction of Best Overall, Best Cinematography, Best Live Performance, and other titles.

What happens and when?
On Friday, July 28th, a limited number of teams of daring filmmakers will gather at the Magnolia Lounge to receive their mission and 100 feet of 16 mm reversal film. At the stroke of midnight, we will reveal the surprise theme, location, and prop which each team will creatively incorporate into their film. The teams will race to their cars and begin a 24-hour moviemaking marathon in which they write and shoot in sequence a 3-minute film incorporating the surprise elements. No later than midnight the following night, the teams must carry their completed film across the finish line.
Once the finished films are collected, we will send them off to be processed and put onto a reel. No one will see the films until they are screened at the Angelika Film Center in Mockingbird Station on the opening night of the Dallas Video Festival, on August 8.
Now this is where it gets really interesting- the teams will provide a live soundtrack to their films during the screening by whatever means they devise- improvised dialogue, a chorus of kazoos, anything they want. We will provide 3 wireless mics, an audio input to the board, and 3 minutes to set up for the performance (while the other film is being taken down). A panel of judges will judge the teams and trophies will be awarded at the screening.

Why do it?
Chances are that you’ve already heard of or participated in our 24 Hour Video Race. Well, Guts and Glory takes the competition to the next level with its use of film and addition of the live performance element, which make the race more challenging, more risky, and ultimately more rewarding.
