23.98 to broadcast. How do you do it?

Hi everyone, i'm working on a short and am finished editing it in FCP4 at 23.98 (advanced pulldown) and would like to export it for broadcast while still preserving the 24p look? I assume broadcast is NTSC 30 (or is it 29.97). Is there a thread which already discusses this? I can't tell by some of the subject titles and don't have time to open each one of them.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 23.98 to broadcast. How do you do it?

M,
In order to export your timeline to 29.97 you will have to either export the video as 23.98 and then import it into After Effects and change the time. Or export it to tape and then re import it. To me this seems like the easiest option, or the only if you don't have After Effects.

To export it to 29.97 to tape you will have to adjust how FCP will output it to tape. Go to the Final Cut Pro>System Settings menu. Make sure Video Quality: is set to High. And the Pulldown Pattern: is set to 2:3:2:3, this is the highest setting. You will get the best quality from this setting. If you are getting dropped frames then your computer is not fast enough to handle adding this pulldown and you will have to change this setting to 2:3:3:2 . But as a reminder this is not the best setting and the video will not be as smooth. Also make sure that you have synced your audio with your video, as in 24p it seems to slip after a while.

Hope this works for you,

You should be able to export a 23.98 project directly to a DV tape. Once it leaves FCP via Firewire, the pulldown is inserted and your DV tape will be at 29.97. Try it and see what happens.

Yeah you're right! When i do that then transfer to vhs or what not it seems fine. Thanks again for both of your tips.
