21 Grams Cinematography

I love the gritty feel of this film. I am considering doing my upcoming feature handheld, using the VI S-800 Pro shoulder mount. My question is, if I'm going for a shakey handheld look, should I use the electronic image stablization? I want it to look handheld, but I don't want the image to be annoyingly jittery. Will using the image stablizer destroy the handheld look of "21 Grams"?

Re: 21 Grams Cinematography

I would use OIS. Remember, those film cameras are much heavier than our little dvx's and therefore inherently less shaky. You'll still get your fair share of shakes with OIS on. But you should do a few tests to see which you like. Also, I probably would NOT use a shoulder support if shake is what you're after.

I shot some handheld stuff with OIS on and it looked good. We did have the guy actively give the camera a little more movement, but I think you don't want small jitters, you want a little bit larger handheld movement if at all.

If you want to get that shaky type of image I would recommend the steady cam or glide cam. Shaky images with camcorders aren´t that good, so use the glide cam and you´ll have a soft shaky image.

cheers.

Re: 21 Grams Cinematography

I just watched the movie again last night, just to see the cinematography. I realize now that the camera is not so much shakey as it is free. It can move as fast or slow as it wants, and it's not restricted to a tripod.

I think static tripod shots can be very amateurish. I think long shots w/ dynamic camera angles is much more professional. And sometimes it gets shakey because the operator is trying to hold a close up, while moving with the subject(which is what i was thinking of originally). I think I will shott w/ a shoulder mount as well as OIS. That will give me smooth movement, but the camera will also be free, and able to move however it wants.
