2012 - Yeah baby.

Hehe, I totally thought there'd be space ships too. Some giant launch into space somewhere, hah. Didn't realize that an ark would be more realistic to build in 3 years.

I hear in Hong Kong they went into applause when the Chinese soldiers saluted the Americans. Hehe, none of that in Beijing, odd.

Been waiting for this movie ever since I saw the teaser trailer. Finally saw it the other night and not too surprisingly, it was completely laughable. Oh well. I enjoyed it more as a comedy. It was funny to see some of my 'less-than-favorite places' gets swallowed by the earth! Ha! Take that LA!

When the final message is, "don't worry, technology can save you if you're obscenely rich... oh, and we'll have a zoo for your spoiled little kids with bad russian accents too", I start to tune out and think about all the 'painters' that made this movie. Wow. What a job!

2012- The time when physics doesn't apply anymore. AWESOME!

that was the longest visual effect demo reel I've ever seen.

The same could be said for Transformers 2.

Independence Day is still my favorite Emmerich picture, it's one of the movies that got me into filmmaking, but this one comes in right behind it.

Yep, Independence Day, and I'd also add Stargate, are Emmerich's best films.

Supposedly, he has recently been talking about an Independence Day sequel. I'd rather see that than another of his mega-disaster films, even though 2012 looks fun.

I kind of thought The Patriot is Roland's best film.

Different strokes.

Probably his best film in terms of writing and acting, but for some reason Stargate and Independence Day are two films I'll always watch when I'm channel surfing and I come across them on cable.

I did like The Patriot though.

I guess I view Emmerich like I do Michael Bay. They are both technically proficient at making a specific type of film, and each have made 2 or 3 films I really enjoy, but then they have produced stuff I just can't stand.

ahhaha. I HAD no idea he directed the patriot. Wow. Great movie, but damn. He made that? Really?

Anyway, I agree Stargate is probably his best film. Independence Day his funnest film, and the patriot his most well crafted.

Yeah, it's the most un-Roland, of Roland's films. Which - I suspect - is why it's probably also his best. Well, that plus he didn't write the story or screenplay. I always used to think, some day someone will hand Roland a really good script, and *then* he will make a really fine movie. Which is sort of what happened.

Stargate and Independence Day are both best enjoyed with the volume off.

IMO.

My problem with The Patriot is that I felt the revenge plot cut off the legs of the other themes in the story. Of course if someone is raping a killing your family and burning your house...you fight back. But what if you're fighting for an ideal, like freedom, or in the case of the Revolutionary War, no taxation without representation. Revenge kind of erases all argument and makes the story one dimensional. It's all about killing one guy. I think it's the main reason Braveheart is a superior film. The revenge element of the story is dispensed with fairly early, leaving the rest of the film to wrestle with the politics of rebellion against an oppressive empire. But it's easily Roland's most well shot piece, and even with its problems the best written.

wtf? did the chinese build the ark? 2012 is the best comedy ever. unless it said made in japan, i'm not getting on the thing. nevermind, i'd sail on anything if it meant chinese food was going to be served

I hear people talking about plot and lack of it in movies etc., but honestly...in a movie like this I don't expect there to be a traditional plot. Especially when the world is coming to an end. I expect there to be chaos...a lot of it. That's exactly what happened in this film. The CG threw this movie into overdrive. Sure...a lot of it is unbelievable...but...we needed to be entertained and entertaining it was. And yes...it was funny.

Who cares about a plot in a diaster movie!! I want to see stuff destroyed and people killed. I thought it did a good job of that. The plot wasn't really that bad. It is a ' just go have fun watching it' kind of movie.

Okay.. non political reply...

The writers could have done better to at least make it semi-realistic. One character claims "10 people could fit in this room!"... and then they let thousands of people on the ship... One never questions how they plan to FEED those extra people for what could be a very long time! Everyone on the ship could die of starvation, but that was never brought up. Instead the "rich guy" is evil, and the common folks are "good"... uh huh...

I also found it funny that we turned to communist China to help "save the world" and house the "arc's"....

For at least one of those scenarios you mentioned here’s a little bit of reality for you… America would of never had the funding to build those Arcs cheaply and in such short notice…but China on the other hand….yup. It wouldn’t matter how many billions they got from those rich individuals either.

….and as far as food….they could go fishing. :) But to be honest…those people they let on “after the fact” were all supposed to be on the Arc anyways… They only closed the doors because the doo-doo was going to hit the fan a lot sooner than originally expected.

And in the possibility of world destruction...who cares about the governing authorities..... I would expect cooperation from the best of friends as well as enemies. That's probably one thing that could bring us all together....other than an alien attack on the world....but we already had "Independence Day." :)

I really don't want to be the guy to defend this stupid movie...but....The character was referring to his own living quarters, and the assumption that every person on the arc had a living quarters that could fit 10 extra people, multiply that by thousands, you could easily get hundreds of thousands of more people on the arc.

Very true.

Not exactly true... Even the main character wasn't invited but he and his family snuk on.. There were a few that were supposed to get on but didn't the first time like the Russian, but the majority were not invited. That's why it was kept a secret.

True, but.... how to feed those thousands? Maybe they didn't or couldn't bring enough food and other resources to accommodate those hundreds of thousands? What if they would need to be on the arc for years? Imagine the close quarters for years? Now imagine the swine flu spreading through the arc. Those close quarters would amplify the illness.
