2009 Biggest Box Office Year Ever!

Pretty sure I read that ticket sales are up as well, meaning it's not solely a result of increased ticket prices.

This link says the average ticket price for a movie in 1939 was 23 cents: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Average_of_movie_ticket_in_1939

in 2008 dollars that's $3.53 but the internet is also saying $1.10 was the ticket price for Gone With the Wind when it first came out so that's $16.88 in 2008 dollars, that was one expensive movie back then, Cameron would be proud. The budget for it was $3.9M adjusted for 2008 is $$59.8M.

Last weekend was the biggest weekend EVER for movies beating the largest summer weekends.

$278M weekend take with a lot of theaters closed for Christmas and parts of the country snowed in.

Ok, I just read in an aticle that attendance is up 5.1% this year over 2008 and B.O. sales are up alomost 10% at about $1B higher.

Seems consonant with that old saw about people spending more time at the movies when the economy's in the sh*tter...
