2 Questions...

I recently shot, edited and delivered a video of a party to someone and they wanted to send a full hour and a half uncut DVD of the whole thing to their family in the Philippines. I tried to just add all the video files to one timeline and export but it freezes every time. Is there an alternative to burning all that? I am also assuming I will need to burn to PAL. I am running an Apple iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 gHZ with 3 GB of RAM. Should I send it to a professional editor with a faster computer or deliver more than one DVD or what? I need to know fast... I shot on my DVX100B NTSC 60i...

The first DVD is the only one that will go slow, but it will go quite slow. After that copies will just take a few minutes because you don't need to encode. Is your footage all pre-rendered before you try to export it? Can you export the video first, then try to use a dedicated DVD burner/encoder to work with it? I don't use FCP, but it's possible the program just isn't doing it as well as others might. Your computer seems fine for the job, it shouldn't lock up if the encoder program is working right.

Doesn't have to be PAL- NTSC DVDs will play on any PAL player. Export your timeline with current settings as a self-contained movie. Then drop into iDVD or into DVDSP if you know how to use it.

The problem isn't so much burning the DVD, it's the fact that my computer freezes when I drop everything into the timeline. It will go in, and doesn't need to be rendered but when I go to File>Export, it freezes with the spinning multi-colored wheel then I have to force quit the application and I get a message on the screen saying that Mac OS X has encountered a fatal error and must restart. It has happened 3 times in a row and I recently did a full erase of the hard drive and re-installed everything just to start off fresh.

That may work if I do 30 min. sections, but do you think I could fit an hour and a half of footage on one 4.7 GB DVD at pretty good quality? Or should I do 2 DVD's? Should I export as MPEG-2/4 or MOV?

It can work, even on a single layer, but if you can't export anything that doesn't help you. If you're in a hurry it might be best to just stick it on a hard drive and deliver it to someone who has a workflow they're sure of, but in the long term this has to be fixed. Is there a more detailed error message you end up with? And does this happen as soon as you click the export button in the menu, or do you mean when you actually start the export process?

Try what was suggested, using smaller clips. Not so you'll end up with smaller clips in the end, but just to see what happens with your software and help narrow down what the problem might be.

I think the Philippines is NTSC, as is Japan... As for why your machine locks up... don't really know about that... How are you 'outputing' this are you just outputing standard DV or are you trying to transcode to something?

I'd chunk it up into 20 minute segments, and use the DVD authoring software, or a favored compressor to output the Mpeg2 material...
