2 pass rendering - what's it do?

I noticed someone suggested checking the "2 pass render" option in render mpeg format files. Can someone tell me what that does? Thanks -

The first pass "maps" the video file; the second does the encoding. It can make for a more efficient compression, but it does take longer.

Thanks for the explanation David. I’ll give it a try on my next video. Interesting this is not an option that is selected in the default render settings for my templates that came with Vegas. I wonder why, if it’s better…maybe length of time to render? But I rather have better than faster
