2 Mic questions: Lav Pattern and handheld choice

Hi All,
I've had the Sennheiser EW100ENG recommended to me as a good system to use with the DVX. The ME2 lav mic has an omni pattern. Is this the way to go for use out in the world, or would cartoid be better? My background is studio tv, so I'm not sure if the world outside is too noisy for an omni.

Also, the EW100ENG includes the SKP100G2 plug in transmitter for a handheld mic. What is the favorite mic for handheld use? I was looking at the Sennheiser MD-46. Has anyone used it? What do you think?

Thanks,
Mike

I vastly prefer omni lavalieres to cardioids. Omnis work very well in uncontrolled situations. If your interviewee (or whoever's wearing the lav) turns his/her head, a cardiod will sound terrible, a lavaliere can deal with it.

If you have a fixed-in-position talking head (like a CNN interview, perhaps) then a cardioid is fine, and can have some background noise rejection. But if you don't have that luxury, an omni is a lot more flexible.

Thanks Barry. By the way, I just got my DVX-100A. and I'm about 1/3 of the way into your book. It's great, and I'm learning alot.
Thanks,
Mike

P.S. Like your last name. ;-)

omni as Barry mentined , the head terns would be awful with directional pattern mike

I've got 3 MD46's and I'm pretty happy with them. The noise rejection from the cardioid pattern comes in handy, especially in noisy situations. However, you do have to train your talent to point the mic correctly.

Also, the ME2 mics that come with the G2 kits are not the best lavs. If you've got extra money, consider an alternative. Search this forum for suggestions.

Thanks guys! Omni lav it is. I'll take a look at alternates for the ME2. And I'll go with the MD46. It's specs looked good, but it's always great to hear real world experiences.
And, I'm very patient.......so it should even be possible to teach talent to use it right.
Have fun,
Mike
