2 Audio Issues that need your help...

These might be basic/common issues. I tried searching on the forum without finding anything specific for them.

I'm editing my project in Vegas 5.0

Here they are:
1) How do i increase/decrease volume levels for individual clips within an Audio Track?

2) Also, we shot our scenes outdoors near the road, and there's road noise (bus/cars driving by) and wind noise. Can i reduce them somehow?

Please advise. Thanks much for your help.

1) Two ways -- you can lower the gain just like you would lower the opacity of a video clip -- grap the very top of the clip and lower the blue line. Right-click on the track and insert a volume envelope.

2) An actual Noise Reduction application would be your best bet, but within Vegas, you can try a couple of things. Try applying a Noise Gate (there's one applied to every track at default; adjust), or try lowering individual frequencies within the graphic equalizer.

What application would reduce noise? Can u suggest any? I tried the 1st suggestion you gave, works great. Thanks.

I'm trying the second one - altering the Noise Gate setting.

There's Sony's Noise Reduction application, but it's (last I checked) $280. Said to be outstanding, though.

For free, I'd look around the Net for Audacity. Not a bad little free program.

Actually, I encountered this problem when importing guitar from an amp through a MIDI into Logic. (Right now you're thinking, how could that possibly be the same? Well,
The main guitarist was hooked up to an amp, then through the amp she was hooked up into a MIDI controller and from there into Logic. We kept getting a lot of static and real bad feedback, and we kept thinking it was wiring, faulty programming, anything else. What it was is that the amp was turned down extremely low, almost muted, and the MIDI controller had to elecronically amplify the noise, resulting in the crunch and feedback.

Basically what came out of that was the fact that your original audio file should be at it's normal level always, (not always, because in editing audio plays an important role at different levels) but your master level should be the one to turn down/up. This way, you'll have a constant quality on the audio, just the volume is a different level.

That didn't really answer the noise reduction question, but I felt that it was necessary to add that static doesn't always come from what you filmed.
