2.40:1 masking in Vegas?

Widescreen... Look at Blackhawks screengrab... It comes out like that, but it just... doesn't have those thicker bars... As if your watching a movie through a rectangle or something... It just looks like a 16:9 crop...

Did you change the footage pixel aspect ratio to 1.21? (You do this by right-clicking on it and going into its Properties.)

Can you post a screen shot of what it looks like, and your timeline/clip settings? Also, would like to see what it looks like in your pan/crop tool.

I would, but I don't know how to... It comes out just like Blackhawks... And he says thats 2:35:1 or 2:40:1 or whatever... But, if I watch... Kill Bill (for example) and it's 2:35:1 widescreen... Those crop bars look more like how the 270 height for 4:3 mode is... Thick... Should I just crop the height to 270 for widescreen to get the 2:40:1 anamorphic? Or will that be doing something bad to my image?

use Print Screen button near the Scroll Lock.

then put in Paint and crop out the entire image.

This is what happens when you make your Height to 270 with widescreen footage in a widescreen project.

That's wayyyyyyy too thick for the black bars.

Do a screen capture of Kill Bill. Then, bring that image file into Vegas and open up a widescreen project. Then you should notice it doesnt fill out the entire screen because you have to crop it to 16:9. Crop it with Vegas' preset 16:9.
After you do that, uncheck the Lock Aspect ratio button and keep Size About Center on. Now crop it until you get to the borderes of the black bars making sure that you take out all the black in the image. To find out if you took out the black, put a random color generator under that layer. Once you finished cropping, save the preset and name it Cinemascope or what ever you want to call it.

*I'm basing this procedure in the way that the DVD player auto orients the DVD to properly fit on a 4:3 TV

hope that helps...

Cool, thanks... but don't forget... the 2:40:1 crop would be thicker than the 2:35:1 crop... Try it with: 306 and see what comes up for 2:35:1...

A 2.40:1 crop only negligibly different from a 2.35:1 crop. Takes quite an eye to tell the difference if they're not right next to each other.

306 would be too narrow -- but then, if you like the look, go for it.

After comparing my height of 369.4 to Dave's 355. The 355 looks alot better. That's wider than 2:35:1 right?

How do you do the math Dave? What's the formula?

Watch your pixel shape, too.

Those screencaps show 873x480. That's widescreen (16x9) but square pixels, like for the web or other computer viewing.

I always tangle myself up with the x360 or x306 thing. They're both correct...but one is rectangular and one is square pixels. (And if I could remember which was which, I'd tell ya.)

Quick question for David: I want to set up a Cinemascope matte in Vegas 7, with footage capture via HDlink (1440x1080) from an Canon XH-A1 and would like to get the same 2:35 or 2:40 from the footage. No wide angle adapters were used. I'd like to be able to keep a version of the master in HD and have a version in SD (Widescreen DVD 24P). Thanks in advance.

Same formula, just substitute the height:

1080/9 * 16 = 1920 (which should a surprise to no one)

1920/2.4 = 800

1920/2.35 = 817
