2/3rd Inch relay for Brevis available

sooooo...you are effectively not using the full size of the Brevis GG or the Letus GG etc, which they have made bigger than 35mm. You are cropping more than I would if I had my stock lens on. Correct?

For the GG.relay/24 (super 35) yes, but you can use the GG.relay/36 which is for photographic lenses 36mm X 24mm. But I thing with Bravis35 there be a possibility of a problem due to the size of the biggest GG which is 38mm x 25mm… quite on the edge.

mmmm...have you tried it on the letus yet? I believe it has a bigger ground glass.

Also be interesting to see how it works with the Brevis flip attached, which I have.

Cropping is an issue that we're not willing to compromise on. We did indeed purchase an HPX500 to use as a test mule for our relay project...which is going well. I'll admit being somewhat aghast at the expense and size of the HPX500 (relative to the smaller cams most of our customers own). Sure, it's $10K for the body but that's without batteries, lens, base plate or P2 cards...so the real cost of a basic package is over $20K. Now that we've taken footage with the camera, I'm in love with it...warts and all. It's without doubt the cleanest, most light efficient package I've ever used and at something like 800 ASA, shoots incredibly clean footage. With these qualities, the camera is about to become an amazing adapter package.

The Cinevate relay has zero crop factor on a 2/3" cam, meaning your 28mm SLR lens will have the same field of view as you'd expect. Some refer to that format as "Vista Vision" which emulates the look of film run sideways to take advantage of much larger frame widths. We are not just strapping a 35mm lens on but rather developing the optics around the adapter. This is exactly how the flip unit was done (ground up) and the attention to detail shows in the amazing sharpness and low chromatic aberration in the system. With a cropped solution (much cheaper to do as you can just use an appropriate 35mm lens), a 28mm lens may have the field of view of a 50mm lens, and a 50mm becomes a 100mm etc. This is great if you just want to get a lens mounted, but loosing potentially 50% field of view, regardless of format, has never been acceptable to me.

dennis a relay with a "vista vision" sized frame would make PL cinema lenses useless....

are you going to make two versions, a vista and a cinema?

I spoke with Evangelos. He said he could have the non cropped version for SLR lenses in 4 weeks.

Dennis, is your relay a four-week-thing or a post-NAB-stay-tuned-thing?

Has anyone heard from Letus on their timeline?

Dennis, I agree with jenningsp. This is the problem on a relay that apparently you need a different system entirely for PL mount cine lenses.

Either that or just decide to settle on PL size and give up the full image of the SLR lenses. That's a nasty choice. I wonder if there's a way to make both possible on the same adapter? We don't ask for much do we?

No, you're asking for what you'll get :-) In other words, full frame, both formats...and flipped of course. Regardless, it's pretty cool that these guys worked up a solution!

When I was started the design I faced that problem immediately, do a PL relay, or a Photographic one, or design a micro zoom relay lens that can fit to both formats…

After a while in the lens modelling software I realized that a zoom is a compromise one of the two formats will be degraded either in distortion or in MTF or in both. (Even thought my relay is following the Leica style…)

It’s the typical reason why we all use prime lenses and not zooms…

So because in the resolutions above 600 lines the things are getting very critical, tolerances of -/+ 0,02mm can effect a design not to be able to get 1100 lines and limited to 800 lines because the tolerances needed are better than -/+ 0,005mm I decided to go with the best performance and not with the best user friendliness since the relay its targeted to Camera systems that are very demanding like Cinealta F900R, F23 and HPX3000 and to DoP’s that self testing everything in order to get the top performance… not to mention that all these cameras don’t need a flip because they have a scan reverse option…

I choose the safe way of two relays or three because some PL lenses cant get the super35 size and they need a standard 35 and it’s the same reason (performance) why my relay’s are build in the same CNC Lab that Lockheed build same of the most demanding cobalt alloy parts of the P&W turbofan engines of the F16’s that we use in Europe…

So there will be two versions one that will do everything and one tailored for every application, that’s good news!

Denis I was waiting for your solution, or someone else’s, for two years… I just fed up, I was either buy a 100K$ set of primes for my rentals or I would invest them to build one and solve an industry wide problem…

I choose your ground glass adapter because I thing it’s the best design up to today.

It's all good. It's great to see some innovation happening around the product, and it can only improve the situation for the shooters out there :-)
