2.35:1

If I'm editing HDV and I want to convert the 16:9 Product into a traditional more cinematic 2.35:1 ratio... what should I do? I tried creating a new sequence with that kind of proporton and then dropping the previous edited 16:9 sequence into the 2.35:1 sequence but the 16:9 only occupies a portion of it. To the left and right sides there is substantial black. Does anyone know how to properly go about this?

Really it's not that simple to "convert" it to 2.35:1.

Usually, if you are planning on outputting your project as cinemascope you shoot it at that ratio.

Basically 2.35:1 is 16:9 cropped.

You could merely change the scale of your project under the motion tab to fit into this 2:35:1 timeline... but this may stretch your image and you'll for sure lose picture quality.

Or, you could just throw a 2.35:1 widescreen matte on your 16:9 project, but this may cut off valuable picture.

Really though, to comment on exactly what you wrote... 16:9 is the traditional cinematic ratio. Both are. Cinemascope is a stylistic choice. A choice that works way better if you decide you are going to use it before you start shooting.

If you want export as fake 2:35:1 you should do what I do, I dont this anymore I figure HDV and 16:9 go good together no need for 2:35. But you can place the 2:35 matte over the 16:9 HDV footage, then stretch the image so the black bars are gone, making it a semi anamorphic 2:35 image, then export it with the correct image size for whatever your doing, you have to calculate it yourself then you can work with it as 2:35 etc..

I agree with stabb though make sure you decide this before you shoot.
