2.35:1 on External Monitor Playback?

Playing my FCP sequence in 16:9 works great, but when I play a 2.35:1 sequence through an external 1080p monitor, it automatically gets stretched to 16:9! The aspect ratio is fine when the image is paused, but as soon as I press play it stretches. Does anybody know how to keep the black bars?

I know I'm late to this party...

I believe the issue is that the video card cannot output a signal that is not a standard size during playback. The monitor won't accept it, either, without affecting it in some way. Hope this helps!

What are you doing, exactly? Is your sequence aspect ratio actually 2.35:1, or do you have 2.35:1 footage in a 16:9 sequence?

If you created a 2.35:1 sequence, what do you plan to do with it when you're finished? I ask this because it's quite possible you should be working in a 16:9 sequence anyway.

EDIT: WHOA, old post. Might not get a response, but still valid questions.

I suspect that if it resizes during preview, it's because he's using "cropped" video (2.35:1) in a 16:9 sequence. Working with 16:9 video with a 2.35:1 black matte overlay wouldn't do that. That's why I'm using a .psd file over my video.
