2/3" Relay Lens. Who Will Save Us?

Now that the HPX is a bonafide hit, can someone please make a relay lens to 72mm so we can screw our SG''s, Brevi, Letus, etc directly into 2/3 inch cameras.

This would be the holy grail of LC adaptors for 2/3 inch cameras.

For me and every other DP who has rented a PS Tech/Varicam combo, the DOF characteristics of 2/3" lenses systems yields too much DOF. Even with Digiprimes, a Zeiss digiprime wide open gives the same DOF (for similar field of view) in 35mm at almost a 5.6 1/3.

Go here if you want to see for yourself: http://www.panavision.co.nz/main/kbase/reference/calcFOVform.asp

The PS Technik lists at 25 G. Which makes one wait for RED.

But an HPX with a low cost adaptor and Nikons would really be an incredible combo in terms of bang for buck. I like the the CAC lenses in theory but like many others, I've no interest in ENG work. I want the cinematic experience of short DOF. Not only does it give me that attention grabbing selective focus but also takes the curse off of the edge of blown out backgrounds that 2/3" still struggles with.

In short, I know many of you adaptor makers are super busy and backordered from here to next year. But now that low cost 2/3" HD is a reality, you must answer with a way to get your adaptors on to B mounts.

You've fans who are now growing up and soon to be out of the HVX spell but still want to take the optical charms of your adaptors with us. But we don't want to go through a zoom lens to get there. I would so much love to just get the HPX, no lens and go straight to my SG PRO and then to NIKON.

This would solve so many of the light issues we have with adaptors. And with the HPX's flip mode, you'll even have an edge on the vaunted PS Tech.

Whoever makes this a reality will win NAB super inventor of the year and I'll take your and your family to dinner in Brooklyn next time your here.

Make it so! Don't sleep.

I'm done. All you other adaptor heads, join the clarion call and add to the noise to fill such a glaring gap.

what? who? where? I ain't sleep'n. Nubody's sleeeeeeeep'n here..
I can't sleep no-mo-now.
Who could possibly sleep anymoo? Done the 2/3" in 2005. snooorrrrr....
If you made it, where is it? Did it fall under your bed? Wake up, Dan. It's all been a bad dream.

I still have the pics, but the links don't work.
the market wasn't ready to support the newcomer. We'll see.

They were making a relay lens for the JVC and didn't finish it...

But I guess if they got a ton of emails asking for a relay they'd make it..

I know in the email they sent me back they wanted to know what would be a good price...

The email is info@lensmount.com

I believe that they're in England...

We will have such a relay in short order :-) With our flip package about to come online, we've got the "missing link" in the chain and can now proceed with the relay. At this point, it will be modular.

What really bites is that according to the review, it's effective lowest T Stop for various optical reasons is 2.8, which in super 16mm is similar to shooting 35mm (with the same field of view) at 5.6.

Whenever I shoot Super 16mm, to emulate the DOF we find "cinematic" in 35mm, I'm usually shooting between a 1.4 and a 2.0.

You can use any of the existing adapters in front of the existing 2/3" lens, provided your lens can focus close enough. The only relay-lens option out right now is the Pro35, IINM.

Barry,
Have you done that?
I've been meaning to test the Brevis but haven't had a chance yet.

I've been concerned that it may be hard to get good edge to edge sharpness with the optics of a larger camera. It seems it would put more strain on the achromat as it would be focusing on a comparatively smaller target than on a 1/3" camera. But if it works, it works. Most 2/3" lenses have the same 82mm lens that the HVX has so in that way it should be an easy adaptation. It's always been surprising that no one has posted results of that.
