2:3:3:2 pulldown question

Alright I've just captured my first footage into fcp shot in 24pa. I've counted up the frames and I get 24 distinct frames so it seems that pulldown was done correctly but I have one question. It seems in some clips it is the third frame that is removed as part of the pulldown. Should all the following clips also have the third frame dropped or does it vary...say sometimes the third frame, sometimes the second, sometimes the fourth.

When I captured it mostly said "performing advanced pulldown on material" but with a couple clips it did not yet they loaded fine and when I counted the frames I got 24 and that is what it said int he browser also.

Often though the process stops and I get this window that says "capture now was aborted due to break in cadence in vfr/pulldown in the source stream." What does that exactly mean and what can I do about it?

Oh ya I READ THAT STICKY ABOUT 24PA but all that did was CONFUSE me more.

In FCP it has an easy set up of 24p advanced pulldown 2:3:3:2 in the log and capture section so it is that simple yes.

Your settings are correct and yes, it's pretty easy.

Check the clips in the bin. They should be 23.98 fps.
Break in cadence is likely a tiem code break. Did you stop and start the camera? Power it off, review, etc.
If so there's a time code break. Use Rec Check button in the future. For now log the clip to right before that point and then log another segment right after the break. Use the batch capture.

I've had the same problem with timecode breaks and capturing 24pa material. After removing pulldown on capture in FCP, the footage will be marked as 29.97 and won't drop into a 24p timeline (without rendering), but I've found that if I open the clips in Cinema Tools, CT recognizes the clips as 23.98 (or .97, whatever the number is). So, what I've been doing is just bringing the problem clips into CT and conforming to 23.98 or whatever, then bring them back into FCP.

Has anyone used this method before, is it working the way I think? The conform process is instant, it doesn't seem like theres really any processing going on in CT since CT acknowledges the clips as 23.98 even though FCP does not. It just seems like this is a quick way to trick FCP into recognizing these clips that should be 23.98 as 23.98 within FCP.

Does this make sense?

Unfortunately FCP does use a non-standard method of determining fps.
If the pulldown has turly already been removed conform may be ok. Just don't try to change a 29.97 clip to 23.98 using conform. (Use reverse telecine)
