I shot a documentary on the DVX-100 in 24p Advanced mode, am editing on FCP HD in 24p advanced with pulldown removed, and according to advice by Noah Kadner on 2pop.com am capturing my footage using these settings:
Sequence preset: DV NTSC 48khz- 23.98
Capture preset: DV NTSC 48khz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal
Device Control Preset: Firewire NTSC NDF
My question is how to configure my playback control settings. This is what I have determined so far would be the best method:
System Setting>Playback Control>
RT: safe
Video quality: Medium
Pulldown Pattern: 2:3:3:2
Record: Full Quality
Are these playback control settings designed only for viewing on an external NTSC monitor? I’m not currently using an external NTSC monitor, but might in the future. Because I’m assuming playback control also relates to how the material is viewed in the timeline (ex. if motion looks like film or video) and also related to printing to tape. Because I want to do a 24p DVD, I would like to keep my footage in 23.98 framerate when I print to tape, I’m assuming that using a pulldown pattern of “2:3:3:2” would keep my 24p advanced footage intact like when it was originally recorded, instead of 2:2:2:4 which I believe is designed for 29.97 NTSC. What is strange is even though I change the setting to “2:3:3:2” in the system settings>playback controls tab, if I click under the small “RT” button on the upper left side of the timeline, pulldown pattern is greyed out and “2:2:2:4” is checked, and I’m not sure why.
I have also set my “record” setting to “full quality” as I obviously would like my footage to be printed to tape as high quality as possible, I don’t know why someone would record using “medium” video quality using playback settings when they could use “full” quality.
Any advice most appreciated.
Thanks,
Alexander
