2:1 Pulldown

Hi All
Anyone out there know of a plugin that allows a 2:1 pulldown. I'm going to be doing a lot of shooting soon where we'll want to have an overcranked and a normal version. I figured that if I could find something that did 2:1 I could shoot at 24pn 48 and have my cake and eat it too. Word.

What's 2:1 pulldown? Never heard of it. If you shoot 48FPS on presumably an HVX200 you can always speed it up to 24 fps on FCP. No special plugin required, just Speed>200%.

But you don't get sound recording at 48fps (or any of the variable frame rates) not to mention it gets old very fast as an effect. So the concept of shooting a project entirely at 48fps is probably not a great one. Also you might find a higher frame rate gives a more convincing slow-mo effect. I'd recommend shooting some tests.

Entire project? My goal here is to preserve the 24p cadence which is why I asked about a 2:1 pulldown. I guess this question asked another way would be..Is anyone familiar with a product that allows you to create your own pulldown rates.

Well again it depends what you mean by pulldown rates and why you want them. Shooting at 48fps and speeding up to 24p is not making your own pulldown, it's simply throwing away frames to get slowmotion footage back up to normal speed. Any footage played on a 24p timeline in FCP will automatically get a 3:2 pulldown. All pulldown does is make 24p footage playable on a 29.97 tv which is why I asked what a 2:1 pulldown is. No such thing really.

Just speeding up or slowing down footage shot at variable frame rates when you decide you don't want a slowmotion or high speed effect. This link might help you get your head around things like pulldown:

One more time clearerer. I'll be shooting some action scenes that I'd like the "option" of doing either realmo or slomo. To accomplish this I'll shoot at 24pn 48. However I would need to have a 2:1 or maybe it's 1:2 PULLDOWN so that I can use the same footage for realmo as well as slomo. Meaning I need to extract every other frame(for realmo) from the 48fps footage to maintain the 24p cadence. Reshooting a shot just for a slow motion option is going to take twice as much time. That's why I want the pulldown so I can just get it once. If such code does not exist I'll just have to weigh the time it takes to reshoot vs the 200% speed option on a shot by shot basis. The other option would be to manually extract every other frame, ouch.

I think like was mentioned before, you're misusing the term 'pulldown.' There is no such thing as a 2:1 or 1:2 pulldown. Maybe you want to wikipedia it or such.

Now as for your actual situation. As long as you're okay with not having audio, then you're fine to shoot at 24pn 48fps. You're shooting more frames then you need. So if you need to run the footage at 24fps then you can let your NLE handle that. Just use speed adjustments as need be. The NLE has all the information it needs, it doesn't have to create frames (that's when quality issues become paramount). Good luck.

cheers.
