1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

Hey, this community has gotten to be pretty large. Wouldn't it be cool in a year or so to plan the first annual DVXUSER convention? It could also be a 24p/dv filmfest as well. Guest speakers, exhibits, etc. Get some big sponsors behind it (ahem Panny), and it would be worth attending. Vegas perhaps? :)

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

With enough advanced notice this would be a great idea. And KAI can take us to the OYMPIC GARDEN!

Im kidding. My wife would kill me or my DVX100.

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

If the movie gets as big as Craig is trying to make it, that would be reason enough . . .

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

If you guys are serious, and we can get some of you out here, I'd do it again.

Last year I held the inaugural Independent Cinema Expo here in Vegas, and I had some good sponsors: Panasonic, ProMax, MWP Publishing, MovieMaker magazine, Women In Film, Film Threat, a bunch of great people.  Speakers included Jerry Molen (Oscar-winning producer of Schindler's List, as well as Jurassic Park I & II, Twister, Minority Report, a bunch of films), Dov Simens ("The Hollywood 2-Day Film School") and Rick Schmidt ("Feature Filmmaking At Used Car Prices") and stuff like that... well, actually, I should just point you to the old website...

The weekend was magnificent, but it was a tremendous amount of work, and being the first year our attendance wasn't quite what I was hoping for.  Tickets were $189, which most people didn't have a problem with, especially considering Dov Simens' course is $299 by itself.

If we got a LOT of people out this next time, I'd definitely do it again -- it was a blast, and everyone there loved it (the comment cards were amazingly positive!)

It wasn't DVX-specific, but by the time we were done it was pretty much a DVX fest, because the camera was just so revolutionary.  This time we could incorporate some screenings, show "Art-History" and "November" and things like that... rent out a theater and show DVX->35mm film screenings, anything that people really, really want to hear.  Get some distributors to attend on a panel so you can hear the realities of what it takes to really, really get your film out there...

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

Barry,

What did you thing of Dov? I can't afford to take his course right now, but I was considering getting his book. Would the book be a worthwhile addition to my little film library?

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

Let me put it this way -- you can't afford NOT to take his course. He's absolutely magnificent. I haven't read the book, but I've taken his 2-day and 4-hour courses, and they're well worth the time. His manner is very abrasive (he's basically like a drill sergeant at boot camp!) so if you have tender feelings, well, it's probably not for you. He tells it like it is, not how we'd all like it to be, and that's very valuable.

If the book relays the same information the 2-day courses do, I'd highly recommend it.

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

Wow, that's good to know. I'm always wondering if these seminar types are going to turn out to be some sort of a con. It sounds like Dov is the reel (sic)deal. I'm also interested in seminars by Guy Magar and Bob McKee, both of which come highly recommended; do you have any input re. these guys?

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

There's also another book called "How to Make a Feature Film for $10,000 (and Not Go to Jail)" -- forget the author's name, but it's also useful, and nothing in Dov's book contradicted it, so I recommend it as well.

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

I've done both the 2day and 4 hour also like Barry. He is the best.  8)

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

I've taken McKee's three-day seminar. If you haven't read his book, then taking his seminar will be akin to a religious experience, opening the gates to true understanding of how stories work. If you've read his book, then it'll be three days of telling you something you've already read. I read the book first, so it wasn't that "new" to me, but his dissection of CasaBlanca was worth the price of admission alone.

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

Yeah, I have Bret Stern's "How to Make a Feature Film for $10,000 (and Not Go to Jail);" it has some good info in it. "Digital Filmmaking 101" by Newton and Gaspard is good as well.

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

Yeah, where we could see a demo of DVX with the mini35 footage, bumped up to 35mm film and projected. ::)

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

Someone start a donation site on paypal or something. I'll give all I can

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

Well, if we did the convention, I'll bring my film print, which has DVX/mini35 footage transferred up to 35mm...

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

I would be up for the convention...
Also what is the formal name of Dov's book and where can it be aquired?

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

Yes indeed.. we gotta get organized for the next meet. Me and Taylor and Lil-red where pretty lonely in Vegas :)

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

You are kidding! That is all the DVX.users.com people that met? Man I was doing location scouting or I would of been there! ???

Re: 1st Annual DVXuser Convention...

I tried to make it, but we ended up scheduling an international mixer for WIF at the same time, and I'm on the board so I had to go to that...
