1920 or 1440 x 1080 What?

Hello All,

Am I doing something wrong?

I have a V1U and on Sony's web site and almost everywhere I look I see 1920 x 1080.

I am using Final Cut Pro 5.1 on HDV1080i60 and I am not shooting 24p yet.

So why does Final Cut Pro tell me a resolution of 1440 x 1080?

Is this weird....am I setting FCP up wrong? Is this something the computer does?

What size should I make stuff in AfterEffects? 1920 or 1440?

Because Sony is employing "marketing" to make people think that it's something that it isn't. When those pages first went up everyone thought "at last, a true 1920x1080 sensor!" But it isn't, it's 960x1080. Then they saw "1920x1080 @ 4:2:2! Wonderful!" But that's only internally; when you record to tape it's the same 1440x1080 @ 4:2:0 as all HDV.

So Final Cut is telling you the truth. It is 1440 x 1080, as all 1080i HDV must be.

As for AfterEffects, it depends on whether you want to work in a "square pixel" environment. Your HDV footage is 1440x1080 with a PAR (pixel aspect ratio) of 1.3333:1. If you want to work in a square-pixel environment you'd use 1920x1080, and AE would have to employ the PAR to stretch the 1440 up to 1920.
 
Ya, I started to read about the 1920 / 1440 problem.

As for AE I guess it's just easier to use 1440 x 1080.

I just wish there was a cheap way to store the P2 footage :(

Barry is correct, howevre i beg to differ with MLcinema. In after effects its much easier to work and preserv your AR with 1920x1080 1:1 square pixels. When working in AE always use square pixels at 1920x1080 and then bring it back into your NLE as 1920x1080 in your HDV timeline. Even though the other footage in your timeline is still 1440x1080 your NLE will conform the 1920x1080 footage back to 1440 while still preserving the proper AR. Its a bit confusing, but if you just do that you will have no trouble going between two, or even three applications. Just remember 1:1 square pixels as a rule and you will be safe..

NLE> AE (1920x1080) > AE> NLE (conforms to 1440x1080) NLE> External rendering software (1920x1080 1:1 square pixels)

I know thats a really bad chart i just made, but spare me, im in class at a lab "working hard" I saw this topic and i ventured out of the A1 section of the forum. hehe
