18% gray card question?

Recently I was working on understanding setting exposure when I ran across this article. http://www.bythom.com/graycards.htm Does anyone agree/disagree with this claim? What are your methods? Is this info accurate? Also how would I go about either testing my camera to find proper exposure levels, or finding documentation of testing someone has already done on the HVX.

Don't even try. Using a light meter to set exposure on a video camera is a very imprecise process that's more likely to result in the wrong exposure than the right exposure.

If you want to know how to properly set exposure, you want to be using a waveform monitor, not a light meter.
