1700 Sunday 09/27 @ the El Capitan

Sad Max

Artful Dodger
Today at 1700 there's going to be a 'Star Trek' retrospective at the El Capitan theater in Hollywood, sponsored by the Motion Picture Art Director's Guild and featuring a bunch of people involved in the design and production of various 'Star Trek' properties.

As it happens my wife has found that she's otherwise obligated tonight, so if someone wants to meet me at the El Capitan around 16:45 - 16:50 they can have her seat.

Call me at 213-447-0812 if you're interested. If voice mail picks up it means the seat is already spoken for.

It was great fun. Although it was at the Egyptian; don't know why I wrote 'El Capitan.'

Production designers from every incarnation of Trek there to talk about the work, and a screening of the director's cut of 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' which frankly is not improved by the addition of extra VFX footage (although one thing I never noticed before is that STTMP makes more frequent and extensive use of split-field diopters to get shots, than any film I have seen before or since...)

How was the resolution of the projected image? I had always heard the FX were done in SD for the DVD to save money. Always sounded like a dubious story. Just curious.

Image quality wasn't great. The new VFX stuff was noticeably cleaner than that original footage, and given the image size and look I'd guess that it was indeed rendered in HD.

It was really striking just how slow and languid the pace of the film is, particularly by present-day standards.
