That's the best solution, but there is something like an Aspect Ratio Converter out there that plugs inline between the monitor and the camera. I think it's more expensive than a 16:9 underscanning monitor though...
Not sure if this helps but...
I recently bought a decent used professional 9" (Panasonic) monitor on ebay for $125 that has underscan capability. It needed some calibration so I took the cover off and was happy to find that there are seperate pots for adjusting the amount of underscan both horizontally and vertically. Well I soon discovered that I could dial in a combination that gave me a perfect correct 16:9 view of my DVX100a Squeeze mode. COOL! So if you wanted both- you could presumably just resize even more in this fashion. Of course if you do go tinkering about inside the guts of your monitor be VERY careful- it has an EXTREMELY high voltage - use a plastic srewdriver to make adjustments and don't go poking around or touching ANYTHING that is not easily adjustable.
Yeah, definitly a monitor that can do it is best. but i would be great to have a device that i could plug inbetween any tv/monitor and have it display correctly.
i am in the market for a monitor as well, that wil do 16x9 and underscan. but havnt done much research on that topic yet. if anyone has any suggestions that would be cool. in the meantime i will browse the forums and the net.
Jon W, i will look into that solution as well. pretty cheap! thanks for the info,
The product your looking for is Transvideo's Format Converter. It can do 16X9 and 2.35. Works with ANY monitor (CRT, LCD, etc). They also sell small on board camera LCD monitors with this feature built in. In both cases....$$$
Otherwise you can go cheap and hunt for a old CRT monitor with horizontal and vertical squeeze controls. As I remember this was a fairly common feature on CRTs about 10 years ago. Find a old one or keep searching for a new one that has this feature. Let us know what you find because it should be useful to all of the DVX users that have the anamorphic len...or even custom made 2.35 anamorphic lenses. Good luck.
