16mm film into Vegas for merging w/ DVX.

What would be the most efficient path. Would I have to get the film developed first, or can they take it right off the negative. Would I want to use negative or reversal or what, and how much roughly. I just want it in files that will work perfectly with raw DVX footage on a Vegas 24p DV timeline, and I only plan to output to DVD and print to tapes. And who would be good to go to? I'm sure I'll have to mail it or something, there's no place around here to get it done.

You have to get film developed of course, but you don't have to get a print made.

Easiest way to go is send it to a lab like Fotokem or Yale for processing (or a better lab if you can afford it). Tell 'em to prep it for transfer, so total processing & prep charge will be about 16 to 18 cents per foot. Then they'll transfer it to video for you for about $175/hour of running time.

I usually figure you can get an 11-minute roll of 16mm film bought, processed, prepped and transferred for around $250.

As far as negative or reversal, that all depends on the look you're going for. The extremely vast majority of motion picture film being shot is negative, and for 16mm you'll probably want something like Vision2 200T or 7245 50D, depending on if you're shooting exteriors or interiors...

Much appreciated. And how does this transfered footage merge with the DVX footage, considering pulldowns and whatnot?

If you're editing in a 24P timeline, you just import the film footage and go to "properties - file format properties", and tell it to remove 2-3 pulldown. Once you set the right starting frame, it'll work just like any 24p footage.
