16 to S16 gate differences

hello,

Will one S16 gate work with all 16 cams if I wish to update a 16 cam? In other words are S16 gates universal, one size fits all if looking to upgrade. Thanks.

Hey
I'm not really sure if they are alll the same size, by common sense I feel that yes the openings to S16 are all the same for sure ( duh!) but the actual gate is different in every cam, or at least for every brand... I mean think about it you can't really comapre a BOlex H16 to Arriflex Sr2? can you?

Thanks Martini. I was asking because I just bought an Arriflex S 16 on the cheap and would eventually like to convert it. Th cool thing is, is that I know of someone who has a Super 16 around $500, I would just buy the cam and switch the gate. But I guess that wouldn't be possible.
1. Apparently the gates are different.
2. I just read that it is no longer possible to upgrade an Arriflex S 16.
That sucks!

Actually Robert....
There are people that still do it but it's really hard to change it
if you want a cam that will be easy to change I will suggest you The Eclairs NPR and the ACL..... those cams are great and cheap and will allow you to make a nice and cheap conversion to super 16

Robert,

There are still a few places that will convert your Arriflex 16S to a Super 16 camera, but it is expensive.

May I suggest shooting 16:9 (widescreen) with your Arriflex 16S just the way it is? It is quite possible. To see examples of what you can do shooting 16:9 with a standard Arriflex 16S, take a look at these film clips:

Arriflex 16S 16:9 (widescreen) Film Clips

Just use slightly slower film stock, like Kodak Vision 2 200T (7217) instead of Kodak Vision 2 500T (7218) and the grain is not that noticeable.

Good luck,
