16 bit and 24 bit audio

I actually like the Tascam HD-P2. For what it is I think it's a fantastic machine.

I just got back from NAB, and Fostex is coming out with a mini FR-2 calle the FR-2LE. No timecode, but it's 24 bit 96Khz, and it's supposed to only be $500.

are you implying its pointless to record in 24 Bit?
i would not spend even 1 extara mb for dialogon 24 bit

good preamp is better solution for proper sounding mic
the 24 is good for music mostly and that is also after good preamp and a2 d

I have a good preamp and plenty of Megs and a good a-d with low noise floor. so nothing there is a problem. The post house happily works in 24 bit, so there are definite advantages in the way of security backup to be had, for free, so to speak. I'm not suggesting that the extra sample depth is useful for quality, just that in the same way as you would record a mono signal with ch2 lower than ch1 for security, here the extra headroom is given extra, in situations where you have to act quickly and unpredicatably. If you have the means, the need and the support for it, then it would be daft not to IMO.

you can do whatever you like - i dont spend extra 30% on storage and time to dump and burn the dailies . and i never( exception on gunshots and similar) run 2 different for security - there is much more chance someone will take the lower channel then ill be overloading the camera or recorder

Given a choice, I agree, a good preamp is far more important the 24 bits. But I would (and do) spend the extra megabytes for 24bit on dialog. I can comfortably record at -20db (as god intended :) ) with a better s/n ratio. Megabytes are cheap and the difference is upload time is not noticable in my experience.

The extra headroom and resolution are great when you get an actor who decides to scream or whisper his lines on the next take.

Cheers

For FX 24 bit is absolutely worth it, music also. Dialog I would be more mixed on. If post is going to be in 16 bit and there is the chance that the picture department is going to make the conversion then I would probably stay with 16. If your handing off to a film post that is going to sync your files then they would probably appreciate the extra bits. But mic, preamp and technique will get you farther than the extra bits. I did some comparisons between DAT and MiniDisk (we needed a very small second package for a job) and with good mics and a good preamp (and transferring out digitally from a rack deck) the sound of most things was so close some could not tell which was which. We started using that package as a second system. It had some limitations, there are just some sounds that freak out the compression, but on BG's and general recording it was quite good. The point is that plug a consumer mic directly into the same recorder and it was completely unacceptable.
